  Umm i'm relatively new to the game and i was wondering if anybody can explain the difference between the 3 options to me.

  Also a question, if i use harass or pound, can i still get the loot? Or is harrass them just to scare them away or something?

You can get loot with any of the three. If you hold your mouse over any of the three options it tells you how dangerous it is for your pirates and any potential captives or recruits. It will also say which weapons are used.
I think it's probably better to pick the option for which your ship is most skilled and for which you have the most weapons. Though I have no proof of this. Undecided

 Okay, I realise it now. Harass gets the least captives while is the least risky and so on....

  Just one question, if i want to boost the knowledge of my area/sea, should i cruise it more or explore it more?

I could swear I put a reply post in here but it's gone!   Shocked  Anyway, check out this thread called Cruise Orders for more details on what orders to use.

On your other question, exploring does increase knowledge faster than cruising, but gets you no money.  So I prefer cruising.  Based on many tests in my Curse of the Blue Parrot scenario, you can fully explore a zone with a fleet of 2 brigs and another ship in one fell swoop if you send them all at once.
