Mountaineers do it for Tropico

« on: 11/20/03 at 12:17 PM »

Sorry to do this to you guys (and gals) who are now playing RT3 but mine hasn't arrived yet!!
I downloaded a few extra maps/scenarios for RT2 and then unzipped them as with Tropico - first into Maps and then, when that didn't work, into Games which doesn't work either.  They come out as jpeg pics and (I assume) the main item as MP2 and dont appear on loading.
There's presumably some action I'm not doing which is explained somewhere on one of the half dozen sites I've been looking at but after a fairly quick perusal I couldn't find how to do it so if one of you could let me know I'd be grateful.
Then I could go back to being the only person playing Tropico!

With RT2, the saved scenarios should have the .mp2 extension. Saved games would be .gm2. I kind of remember someone else having a similar problem some time ago, but I don't remember the solution. Could you try to unzip the files to your desktop or some other location and then move them to Maps?

It should be a simple case of moving the .mp2 file into your Railroad Tycoon II\maps folder

Never had any trouble with it...

The only thing I can think of that might thwart seeing a map is if the campaign map was checked off in the editor.  If it still doesn't work, you may want to open it in the editor and check that.

I've tried all these and none work - in the Editor I've tried typing in just the name and also the full trail to it and with either all I get is not found.  All those originally included in the Maps folder appear and finish .MAP whereas those downloaded show no extension at the end but adding .MAP doesn't work either (not that I'd expect it to).  I'm beat but maybe RT3 will arrive soon and I'll stop caring!

Well RT3 still hasn't arrived so I'm still trying to solve this problem which I've (half) done Grin Cry  All the maps I'd downloaded were from either CeeBees or the Terminal.
Now I've downloaded some from Express World and these appear with a MAP extension and work!!  Grin Grin.  Why this should be the case goodness knows.
Maybe you experts will know?

Yep.  I tried three - Manchester Sheffield Lincs/ Midland/Santa Claus Express.  Probably I got them off Terminal but it might have been CeeBees as I have sometimes managed to get into that site although nowadays it always seems to be down. I've attached my Zip of the first which being where I was born and went trainspotting as a lad and nowadays go walking meant that at least I know where the towns are unlike when I'm playing in (say) Europe and I cant remember where Rumania was ! Let alone Chinese towns Huh

I just downloaded the zip file above and it works just fine in my Platinum Edition. There are three files on it, an .mp2 for the game, a .jpg which is just a picture of the map, and a .txt with game info and history.

Of course the .mp2 shouldn't work in the original version of RT2 where a .map will work. The .mp2 extension should only work in The Second Century and later versions.

That probably explains it.  Goodness knows what my version is cos it was a cheapo (now on sale 99p = £1.30!!) so presumably it's an original not updated in any way.  Since writing the above I've downloaded several more from Express World and unzipped the lot.  Only about a third work so I guess its the same as the Tropico downloads where if you've not got PI most of the extra scenarios dont work.

Of course what else has happened whilst I'm doing this!  RT3 arrives so now TPI and TR2 look like taking second place for a while.  The main thing I've noticed so far and am real grateful for is that there's a cancel last track laying cos I was always trying to lay it too fast and finding it was in the wrong place on RT2 particularly going round corners blind and especially in the Alps Cry

Oooh, make sure you try out Santa Claus Express.  It's for the original RRT2 I think and it's the right time of year.  And I wrote it.   Grin

Heh, heh.  Thanks skeebs.  I'll have to go back and play it before the holidays.  My next year's attempt at the 12 days of Christmas turned out to be impossible.   Embarrassed  My only other scenario was The National Dream/ Canadian Pacific one.

Well if the CPR one might work on my older RT2 post a link and I'll try it - when I was downloading the others I did see some CPR's but not sure which this would be and I'm too busy playing 3  Grin Grin to search!
Pleased I managed Gold at 1st attempt on 1,4 and 5 and 2nd on 2 but it's eluded me on 3 possibly because of a bug.  I magically lost 450 miles of track on my 2nd attempt.  About ten years from home I had 300 and clicked to start placing it and then there was none. A couple of years later I got my 150 and the same thing happened.
I'll post this on the Express World site too to see if there's any response.
