Has anyone tried to do the whole 70 years without any industry?  Is it hard? I'm giving it a shot on a random map, 65% difficulty, but I've failed so far.  Any tips anyone might have?  The capitalists will despise you...  Roll Eyes

i think alastar did this, but i will have to reread his manifesto.  if it was done, it would have to be coupled with lots of oppression or major ass-kissing, because it seems so extreme.  the us & capitalists might stay off your back if you have decent tourism.  i have actually thought of doing it, and only making money off raw goods and tourism.  perhaps we will find out together...

Boy, that'll be tough as hell.  There's two ways you can do it.  Attempt to keep the capitalists happy by Edicts for Pro US and newspapers and radio proclaiming the glory of the capitalist faction.

The other is to go complete Pro Russia and get one of their military bases on your island.  That'll stop the US from invading.  Meanwhile, on the island itself, I'd suppress all capitalists to the extreme.  If they start giving crap, imprison their leader and other staunch supporters.  Bribe others that are loyal to you yet are also capitalists.  In other words, quelch the capitalist faction while keeping the other factions extremely happy (this should still keep your overall respect high).

Hope that helps and good luck.

It would be true irony for this to work with a pro-Russia diplomatic stance.  So far, there has not been a socialistic nation on the face of the earth that could feed itself.  Even the USSR relied on US grain.  Another recent example is Argentina.  Argentina used to be the world's #1 beef exporter.  Yet under a socialist government, Argentina was reduced to looking for help from the capitalistic nations that had more than enough food.  It had nothing to do with the ability of the land to support the production of food.  It had everything to do with the socialist mindset.  To succeed in running a Tropico scenario in that way would be interesting.

On my highest scoring game (over 1000 - yeah, that's not much for you guys but it's alot for me) I played "El Dictator" that was installed by the KGB, and immediately went into tourism. For awhile my food sales outdistanced my tourism revenue, but I'd say throughout the balance was close to 50:50...

Yeah, the capitalists were annoyed (as were the communists with my dependance on tourism) and I even had the US threaten me with a gunboat (I promptly whimpered like a young girl - pro-US statement and a Pro-US policy at the embassy - and allowed an immediate early election, which I won by a wide margin).

All in all though, once my economy took off the arrangement worked out incredibly well. I ended up regularly raising wages at the hotel to keep maidsin service, then increasing the wages of labourers to keep them on the job, then increasing the pay of embassy personnel, then back to the hotel, etc. At the end, my farmers were the lowest paid people on the island, at 16-20 pesos a head! Right towards the end I built a "futbol" stadium...

I called this island "Seychelles".

No Idustry isn't a problem at all as long as you do tourism from the get-go.  Tourism makes the Capitalist happy.

Do a few farms, a mine or two, then tourism out the ying-yang.  I've done it a few times, not great scores, but not bad either, justa  good stable economy (since the mojority of your cash is generated 'on-island')

Now a game with no industry and no tourism... that would be rough!  Would have to make Pol Pot stand up and take notice  Cheesy

I believe someone did a 'Pol Pot' scenario, or at least talked about it. Since Teamstar's scenario archive has gone away, it's hard to search out.

Tourism IS an industry, and the capitalist faction considers it so. It's only farms, ranches, fishing, logging and mining that count as basic "extraction."

If you are not going to build any factories, try to keep the capitalist faction small -- don't give them a newspaper or publicity which builds their numbers. At best, bribe the faction leader from time to time.

Basicly, learn to ignore their complaints, and do as little as possible to placate the U.S. unless you are expert at foreign relations. Throw in with the U.S.S.R. and be happy. And that does not mean being anti-religious.
