Hello,
I can't seem to install the game, and after repeatedly exchanging my cd's for a new copy (and after three unsuccessful installations even purchasing a new copy at a completely different store in another town) I'm having doubts it's due to bad cd's...

I've gone through several installation problems, another one coming up whenever I found a fix or workaround for a previous problem.
I've gone through the following errors:
Attempt one: some missing .cab file (this in my opinion was due to a bad cd).
Attempt 2: installation freezes at 100% while working on the file mssmp3.asi.
Found a work-around in another forum; copy the cd's to harddisk, run autorun.exe from harddisk and when it asks for cd 2, point to the copy of cd 2 on the harddisk.
Having done this, things indeed went rather well... until installation suddenly asked for cd 0 with cab4.
So, I looked around for more fixes and found a few that I tried, every time coming up with different problems to replace the one I was fixing.
Then I found my way to this forum, read a post about removing whatever might be left over from a previous install, and taking it from there...
Did that, and again I came up with the cd 0/cab4 thing.
I run Windows XP, but when I tried it on my brother's system (win98) it came up with different problems every time too.
Went backl to my own system, and now it's the disc 0/cab4 error that keeps bugging me.

Okay, browsed some more to have a look at other people's problems that I might encounter at some point if I found a fix for this problem, and found a post where someone mentioned similar problems, and someone in that thread mentioned how restoring XP to a point he knew worked properly did the trick for him.
Well, I don't have a restore point yet as I did a re-install of Windows just a bit over a week ago, but by now I'm willing to do some weird primitive dance in honor of some obscure freaky deity if that would do the trick so I'm going to see if making a restore point and giving that a go will work for me.
If that doesn't do it... well, I dunno.... anyone have a list of weird deities involved in computer hard- and/or software that might need to be honored?

Hello Man Wolf

Welcome to the boards.

Its disappointing that another person has problems installing.  You have been remarkably persistant in your attempts to get it to work.  It shouldnt have to be this way  Angry Angry

Im a fairly recent new player of Trop2. Full priced version going for a big discount and installed onto an XP machine that had never had a previous version of any other Trop game.  Had no problems im pleased to say.

Is your version a full priced one - or a version packaged with another game in a bundle/jewel case edition ?  Dont get your hopes up - its just my curiosity - I dont know what the answer is except suggest you contact the support for the company that has bundled the product you have brought.

No list of dieties..cept Davey Jones..and a hope that you dont end up consigning Trop2 to his locker.

Good Luck....please post if you get it going..it could help others.

Hiyas Severous....
I got the install fixed, not due to restoring to a restore-point which left me with the same problem, but remembering another thread where someone mentioned he used ctrl-alt-del to get out of the installation when it hung (or asked for cd 0, I forgot which).
Then I could get into the game and got my cheers up again...
Set up a pirate, and the game options and everything, and started the game... but as soon as I selected anything with my mouse, the game froze.
So, I got the 1.2 patch figuring that would fix it.
Well... now it won't recognize the cd anymore.

It's a retail version, it wasn't bundled with anything else, but it was already at a discount price.
Well, discount... a few percents off the old price.
So again I'm going through several forums to find a possible fix.

From the thread: Can't complete Install and others problems

Hi,

I got the same problem as the original poster of this thread and I found a workaround to this problem. You can copy the .dll files from the tropico 2 demo folder and the tropico2.ini file from the tropico 2 disc 1 CD. The game will run.

BUT, there STILL seems to be files missing as I can't get any music to play in the game and after a campaign mission victory, there's a blank screen which you can bypass by pressing the space bar.

Can anyone list out their folder structure of Tropico 2? I got the Campaign, Data, Maps, and Movies folder. My tropico 2 folder itself has the binkw32.dll, mss32.dll, tropico2.exe and the tropico2.ini file.

It's possible the installation could have missed out 1 or 2 files/folders. Can anyone point out them out??

I am posting my folder structure here for the patched version;
My directory listing:
...\Program Files\Tropico 2\
Files: binkw32.dll, DrvMgt.dll, LastMinute.rtf, Mss32.dll, mssm4e1f.rra, PatchReadMe.doc, SECDRV.SYS, T2PatchLog.txt, Tropico2.exe
Folders: Campaign, Data, Maps, Movies, Save
Campaign folder contents: empty (I just installed and patched, so that probably makes sense).
Data folder contents: 54 .{} files, so too many to list lol... but the total size of the files in this folder is 1.55gb.
Maps folder contents: 64 files, a mix of .{} and .txt files, total size 12.8mb.
Movies folder contents: 51 files, I didn't check all the names but every one I checked was a .bik file, total size 200mb.
Save folder: empty.

I am reading this again and wondering whether copying the .ini file will fix my little issue with the patch.
Also, when reading the posts after the one I quoted, I stumbled onto Charlemagne's post where he mentioned the registery-key to look for when doing a re-install so it will be a clean re-install.
So, I may still be giving these options a go....
And I don't intend to consign any of my cd's to Davey Jones' locker just yet... tho I do have a habit of storing them in what used to be my bedroom but now became the haunted hall of old stuff that I've still got to go through in case some of it by now would have a fix...
heh...
Anyways, off into another attempt at making this lil bugger work lol.

Well, copying the .ini file didn't do the trick... so I'm uninstalling, removing the registry-key mentioned in that other thread, and re-installing.
And after that, if needed, I'm trying the .ini file fix again.

lol.... and with a headache hehehe....
But yeah, I've been known to sink my teeth in some cases no matter how hopeless.
For now, however, I'm putting Tropico 2 on the shelf again.
I tried everything I could come up with, and for my last attempt I even folded and tried a crack for the 1.2 version.
It worked for about a minute of sandbox-mode play, then froze up again.
I'm still keeping an eye out for possible fixes, but it's time for me to realize I won't be playing that game today, probably not even this week.
Plus at 02:30 in the night there's no shame in finally putting the dang thing to sleep heh...
