Ive noticed crew members leave one ship in order to join another.   It happened again this evening and ive recorded the circumstances.

Sloop - Captain Rosanne - Rank 3 Leadership 9 Notoriety 4
Snow1 - Captain Morgan - Rank 3 Leadership 9 Notoriety 7
Snow2 - Captain Hook - Rank 3 Leadership 9 Notoriety 6

I fired an exhausted sailor from Morgans Snow. He was replaced with a sailor from Rosanne's Sloop that was also in port at the same time.  The Sloop had not sounded the 'all aboard' yet.

The same thing happened a few seconds later when I fired someone from Hooks Snow..Rosanne lost another one of her crew.

In both cases there were plenty of other pirates on the island and the now vacant positions on Rosanne's Sloop were quickly filled.

This quote is from the manual............
-------------------------------------------------------
Pirates Joining and Leaving Ships
All pirates want a job to make money. Most want to be on ship crews. Less frequently, pirates take jobs on shore. If there is a ship in port with available crew spaces and pirates on the island with no job, they will join the crew. If there is more than one ship needing crewmembers, pirates decide which crew to join on a first come first served basis according to the notoriety of the captain.
--------------------------------------------------------

So it seems that its not just pirates needing a job that will decide which crew to join.  Those already assigned to a ship will reassign themselves elsewhere if one arrives with positions and a higher notoriety.

So crew your most notorious ships [Captains] first.  It also means you may face some disruption to ship crews if a high notoriety ship moors up and has battle casulaties to replace.  Another ship nearly ready to depart may find it loses a key crew member just at the wrong time.  Hope this doesnt work on ships that have already sounded the boarding call..now that would be a pain in the backside.

Once the boarding call on a ship has sounded I've never seen crew change ships.
If a "more popular" captain is returning form a cruise I will often pause the game, see if he/she has lost any crew and if so then blank out those crew jobs. I don't want happy crew joining a ship that's going to be out of action while the captain and rest of the crew meet their entertainment needs.
