Hi,

This is my first post so be gentle.

I was wondering if it would be possible to propaganda your way to suriving 70 years with no military at all?

I don't want of pay the price for a military becuase hay I am cheap and they dont produce anything.)

Welcome Neon:

I've never tried what you're proposing, but I would think it would only work on the easiest of political difficulty settings.  It would greatly upset your militarist faction who, on more difficult settings, would probably rebel en masse.

Why not give it a shot at a high political difficulty level and tell us how it worked out?   Smiley

Regards

It should be possible to survive without a military, as long as you have no rebels. You might have to get rid of most of your militarists though.... 70 years is a long time.

Well I could incorporate it into my present game:  no immigrant;  tiny island;  30 people game.

Only 3 years into it now and I have one soldier. I have one college female on the island now.  So I can afford only one propaganda outlet.

It should be possible, though very, very difficult. You would have to bribe the leader of the Militarist faction to keep them happy. However, bribes only have an effect for 3 times, and each one lasting at most 5 years, I believe. After that time, you would have to, ahem, get rid of the leader. Either imprison him, throw him in a dungeon, or eliminate him. Smiley Once you get a new leader, they are fresh for bribing. Smiley

I did it at moderate political/economic difficulty, no problem. About 100 years into that crazy game I hired a single general Cool The long-oppressed militarists were overjoyed. They're working for equal rights nowadays, but they don't yet have suffrage.

I got past the first election.  The military leader was my oposition.  Won it 18-9.  67% of the vote.  I guess I will have to be nice to everyone else and give em what they want or they will all leave.  I didnt know I couldnt build an immigration office on immigrants out.  DOH!

If I have one dock and I set it to yachts only,  will the teamsters still drop stuff off there?

Yeah, that's one reason the immigrants out is so difficult.  As to the teamster question, I honestly can't remember.  I think they will drop loads off at a yachtts only dock if it is your only dock, but if you have two docks-- one for yachtts and the other for freighters--the will only drop off loads at the freighters only dock.  Not 100% sure, though.

But I was curious what level of political stability you're playing at??

The default setting. Not sure what it is called.  I want to see if I can handle this setting before moving on to utterly rediculous level.) Overall dificulty rateing is 157%

Docks are screwy.  I fired my teamsters the first day and set the dock to yachts only.  Some how 2 loads of corn made their way to the dock.  Eventually I had to hire a priest so I switched to service all ships to bring the priest in.  When the frieghter arrived with the priest, the ship would not leave.  20 months later, after nearly wrecking my economy, I saved the game, shut off the program and reloaded.   That must have woke the captain up becuase the frieghter left port shortly after that!  Thats what I get for bringing in and outsider.)

Well I did have dock workers but I was not paying much attention to them.

Will the farms/mines deliver to a market or retaurant/factory first if they are closer than the dock?

Is there a limit to what can sit at a factory or farm?

I have tourists comming on to the island and no electricity with which to build an airport so i cant demolish the dock.  I guess I could build a second dock for yachts only.

I dont know what sets them off to haul, but the farmers and such will only carry 2-units at once, while the teamsters will carry 5. I have seen ranches pile up over 100-units of beef, perhaps they are broken.... I have seen Tropicans eat beef and want more meals per day, rather than less.... but that is a different thread Wink

Back to the original question.  Personally I try to use as few military as possible. There's usually either one or two to start with and I close off the other positions. If they leave/die I close off his position too - or as quite often happens one is a University graduate I build a surgery and fire him to become a doctor.

I would guess that for at least half of the scenarios you never need another soldier - but then not many go on for 70 years. On balance I do worse from revolting soldiers than I do from rebels.

Welcome to the cafe Neon Deon!

What an interesting thread.

I think I'll go off and try it myself.

I'll let you know how it goes.
