ok, i'm doing the mining scenario on the XP and having a problem with my docks and mines.  first, there is an output store of a ridiculous 50 point something and about 4 ships waiting to dock.  i have 4 dockworkers and even raised the wages, yet the last spot is not being filled.  i don't understand why there is such a HUGE output and why it's not decreasing even when the dock workers are seemingly working all the time.  i also had my gold mine collapse because my workers were being careless?? what the heck does that mean?? how do i make them more careful and what can i do about these lazy dock workers?

A building won't collapse from carelessness or neglect.  A tropical storm will knock it down, but you probably would have noticed that.  Also rebels like to take out your buildings, often the ones on the outskirts of your city (farms, mines, etc.).  Do you have a rebel problem?  The almanac reports the number of rebels on your island.

As far as the dockworker situation goes, CK is correct, it is probably a problem with location.  location, location, location.

yeah actually there is a gold mine collapse written into the scenario.  i had a screen pop up and say "oh no! your gold mine has collapsed because of the workers' carelessness!"  so it wasn't a storm or rebels or anything.  and the thing with the dock is, i have NO money in the treasury to build any more docks, that is the whole problem with the output being so high. my farms and other industries are producing revenue (well, product) but i cannot seem to get the workers to get rid of it to make me money.  i have been in the red for, oh i don't know, about 5, maybe more, years now so i have no funds to build anything.  i guess i'll just wait and see what happens.

I had the same thing happen to me in this scenario - for nearly six or seven years, the goods just sat and sat and sat at the dock, while I watched my dock workers pace around them or walk in circles around my scenic outlook.  It was the strangest thing...

The worst part is that I couldn't build a single thing while all this was happening - I was in the red.  And the ships were backed up at the dock - there was one freighter already there, with TWO OTHERS just waiting.

When they finally started moving the goods, i built a second dock immediately, to the north.  Most of the gold then passed through that dock...

The other interesting thing I noticed was that there were farmers actually hauling sacks of corn and other crops to the docks.  I thought they were lost at first, but when I zoomed in I noticed they were dropping the sacks at the dock and heading back to their respective farms.  I guess my teamsters were concentrating on the gold at the time...

The name of the scenario is, "Gold Rush."

The scripted part is very simple. There is nothing about a delay in having the first freighter dock.

Since there are two reports of a freighter delay with several lined up, it may be that the scriptor's original file has some sort of glitch in it.

I started it up and played for several years. The layout is very, very poor. The huge problem is the little peninsula where the Port is placed at the end of a long road. That location completely messes up the pathfinding for the Dockworkers and Teamsters, and makes them take way too much time to make the trip there. They start on a direct line - ignoring the road - and find the way blocked by a few tiles of water. Then they wander around and finally search out the road to the Port.

I had no problem with freighters docking. The first three appeared in September 1950, and one went right to the dock. They continued regularly as long as I played, the problem was the Dockworkers were able to find their way to work so seldom.

My suggestions to salvage the lousy layout =
While paused at the start, place construction in the following order:
  • Two Construction Offices within 75 tiles of the original Construction Office
  • A Port in a location with a short, direct line from the center of the settlement
    • Immediately set the original Port to Yachts Only and lock out all employees
    • Set the new Port to Freighters Only and set the pay to 6
  • A Marketplace as a catchment for food before the freighter Port *
  • Two Mines, one adjacent to each of the large deposits leaving them set to the All Metals option **
  • Five Bungalows along the road near the tourist port
    While still initially paused:
  • Lockout two positions at the Palace
  • Reset rents
    • Country Houses to 1
    • Blue Houses to 2
  • * Evaluate Farms for a variety in food supply and productivity
    • Setup has unneeded roads which use farming zones, note them for bulldozing later
    • Change Farm options to get as many types of food as possible
  • ** Look carefully at the ore fields to locate the edges ; you have to build eight mines
    • you need to find the exact edge of each deposit because when you build a mine on a tile with ore, nothing else can be built on an ore tile
    • The small, cental ore field has something blocking the construction of a mine near it - what is it?
.
Later, when you have the money build a Teamster's Office near each of the two large ore deposits and bulldoze the original one. Don't worry about the Farmers carrying their goods.

Good luck.
