You know, I was once in office for 60 years early on. That was when I started out playing the game. as The people grew tired of seeing the same old, old, old dinosaur of a president, they tend to vote for me less each time. I held on to the office by denying elections. But they had no reason to be shocked, knowing my background. Then when I left with distinction (i.e. not by rowboat),the throng cheered. They were so happy to see me go that they readily forgave the debt I had created during my stay.

Now I do impossible missions where holding onto power at times is a great battle. My throne is not made of bayonets, but it pricks like one that is.Yet still, I'm benevolent to the populice---sometimes benevolent neglect.

But aren't the peasants sympathetic to the rebel cause? they will then admire you and your shining glory less.

That means that there are only Capitalists and Militarists left. I've never looked closely at the faction memberships, but four factions must command some respectible following (in size when not in principle).

To eliminate half the island or so seems so expensive. Doesn't it cost $500. per "hit"? S-stabeler, how did you come up with that much free money? The most I have at one time was about $22,000.---enough to buy that rum distillery I've wanted so long---by hook or perhaps by crook.

I work like a cheapskate. Always have and maybe always will.

You cant completely eliminate a faction. There is always one person with 3-star loyalty for each faction.

i have actually done it. all right, it didnt fully work for the communists, but the environmentalists, religious and intellectuals certainly seemed to keep their noses out afterward, and didn't have any members, let alone a faction leader as far as i could see. ( ok, they kept the old faction leader). i think what happens is that if you import someone with sympathies in an eliminated faction, then they elect a new leader, but if there are none, they keep the old, dead leader. and as to how i could afford it, this was a test game to see if i could eliminate most of the factions, so i allowed myself the use of pesos. in a normal game, i can't do it all at once. oh, and also, the last time i did it in an ordinarey ga\me, it was a sandbox game anyhow.

You cannot completely eliminate a faction as it is against the parameters of the game.

For further reference, see this thread: http://dynamic3.gamespy.com/~tropico/cafe/index.php?topic=9420.0

as i have said, i have done it, but i am not prepared to argue the point. has it been tested in-game or is it what the developers have said?

There's nothing in the thread referenced above that suggests it should be impossible to eliminate a faction.

I think part of the problem is that faction support is not equal to faction membership. I discovered with my Nerds scenerio that not all the one-plus people were "members" of the Intellectual faction, and some of the zero-plus people were "members"....

Would it not be possible to eliminate ALL of the members?

Artimais's post explains his experiment with lowering faction support. He discovered that the "member" with highest support was automatically increased to 75% support and thus became the leader.

What would happen if ALL of the "members" are eliminated??? There would be no member to increase...

brf- i think it was due to the fact that i was tralking about the start of a game, and there were no people who appesared on the environmentalists, intellectuals etc. pages, it took killing most of the people on the island, but it sure beat those factions. and i checked, it did not reappear, i think, but do not kbnow, if they don't appear on the page they can't become faction leader, may i suggest that it is tested if it is possible to eliminate a faction so that no-one on an island supports it? i'm thinking that if there asre no detractors either, then there won't be a new faction leadewr, would it be possible tro test what happens then?

You can have "detractors" who are members too.... That is what I was saying. The almanac "List of Intellectuals" does not match the number and individuals reported on the Faction page that tells the Leader's concerns.

To hunt down the entire faction, you would have to use the display thingee with the arrows over the heads of the Intellectuals... whatever that is called.....

What would happen if ALL of the "members" are eliminated??? There would be no member to increase...

A couple of notes:

1.  Given that some supporters are really detractors and some dectractors really supporters, yes it would take quite some work to relaly hunt down ALL of the "members".

2.  Given that the game automatically bumps up a faction leader to +++ level, even if all of the members were eliminated, I think the game would just choose the detractor with the highest rating and make them the faction leader.  At least that would be my assumption....

3.  Assuming #2 to be correct (and let me reapeat that this is an assumption), If the game automatically bumps up the closest "decractor" to the faction leader level, it would then be impossible to eliminate an entire faction.  There are six factions, therefore six faction leaders--less than the minimum population needed to continue the game, so to eliminate the entire faction would force you to play even after you are kicked to the rowboat.

note: #2 is an assumption--further testing could verify or disprove it.

Aha!
That is what I was trying to say....

Support does not mean membership.

I think your tests showed that the member with highest support is bumped up to leader-support.

But support does not mean membership. If we killed off all the members, a person would have to be induced to become a member before his support could be bumped up.
