Fabio Salvador (my real name - I was already born with a Tropico-style name...) elected as socialist in 1950.
Just after I took office, I started building houses and tenements near my palace. Until 1957, I just kept saving money and my people was mostly farmers living in houses and tenements.
Stabilished my wages system: Uneducated people: $10 High School grade people: $18 College-level workers: $25
Then, I builded police station, prison, a high school, more corn farms, a cheap hotel, diplomatic office, two new teamster's offices, new houses and an appartment complex. I also made myself a friend of USSR, and received an average $12.000 economid aid from Moscow. This really boosted up my economy.
In 1963, I builded an entirely planned city: houses and apatment complexes organized in rectangles, surrounded by a maketplace, a teamster's office, and more farms.
I called and election in 1955, and won (something like 40-7). The second election came in 1961, and I won with huge advantage again.
Then I started my economic diversification program.
I builded some sugar and tobacco farms to break up corn monopoly. I also left some space for a cannery and a cigar factory, which I would build in the future, after my new farms started to give me some profit.
New houses. Anti-litter program. Free college and a basic education program. The proletariat would learn how to read and write.
Thing were going great. My tobacco farms were not profitable, but hey, industrialization is the key of success - I builded a cigar factory in 1967.
Then, two things happened at the same time: An American gunboat arrived at the beach. It was easy to solve. I just called the Red Army to build a base in my island, and the Yanquis went home.
And... my economy started to shrunk. I just can not understand!!!!!
I tough Rum was made with corn. I had a lot of corn farms. My Rum distilley went bankrupt.
I had a great production of tobacco and yet my cigar factory was a disaster.
I have a lot of sugar and yet my cannery was a disaster too.
With my last remaining money, I destroyed the factories. In 1974, I was back in agriculture-only economy. I had an election this year, and won it without fraud, by a narrow difference of 7 votes.
Surprisingly, the lack of industrialization was good for the country. Economy went broken but just after a few years, it started to recover (with a heavy help from USSR).
Educated workers had to leave the factories, but my island always had more jobs than people to fill them. The farms were filled up with workers.
Then, I just kept expanding my cities, with a lot of farms and many houses near them. The elections of 1981 gave me a new victory. I spent some money on a Mardi Gras to help me, of course.
The people was happy, but the military were not. The salary of a soldier was just the same of a teacher or any other high school grade worker. A military coup attemp in 1985 was smashed by loyal troops.
In 1986, I had a new coup. This time, there were 2 rebels and 2 loyalists. The loyalists won.
After this day, I fired all my soldiers. I had the russian army to grant my safety, so, why would I have soldiers?
Anyway, in 1987, Tropico was again rich and prosperous. The people was happy. Time for a new election. I won again, with no cheat. It was hard, since I had destroyed the only church in the island.
"Religion in the opium of the people"- Karl Marx
Then came the year of 1990. My 40 years term came to an end. Adios, Tropico. Adios, Tropicans.
I was an incorruptible leader, so i had no money in Swiss.
Adios muchachos!!!
