Yeah, I know....stupid question.  I bought Tropico 2: Pirate's Cove back when it came out, played the hell put of it, then switched over to other games.  I bought it basically because of the subject matter (Pirates!!).  I really liked the game (the whole theme of being a dictator), so should I break down and buy the original??  Let me know what everyone thinks.  It seems that there is still a fairly active community dedicated to the original here at the Cafe, given how long the game has been out.  Smiley

In a word, yes. I bought T2 because I enjoyed the original Tropico. I played T2 for about six months, really enjoyed it, but eventually went back to the original.

Try to get the "Mucho Macho" edition, if possible. It includes the original game, the "Paradise Island" expansion (called PI at the cafe), and adds a few more scenarios as well (but generally, the ones you can download from the cafe are better  Wink).  You will find that many of the scenarios and competitions here at the cafe require PI.

It's fun to charter an accountant
And sail the wide accountancy,
To find, explore the funds offshore
And skirt the shoals of bankruptcy!

It can be manly in insurance.
We'll up your premium semi-annually.
It's all tax deductible.
We're fairly incorruptible,
We're sailing on the wide accountancy!

I played the Tropico Demo when I got Railroad Tycoon 2 quite a while ago.  I didn't get it then, but it left an impression in the back of my mind (not a physical one).  I asked for both Tropico Mucho Macho and Tropico 2 for Christmas this year.  I can tell you I don't regret passing up other newer games for Tropico one bit... it's so much fun.  And besides, you can get it cheap now... so, a great game for a nice price, make your move.

(I just joined this board today, hi!)

I think I might have to break down and buy it.  I've seen quite a few of the "Mucho Macho" edition on E-bay for anywhere between $8-$15.

Anyone else have an opinion??

You know, you're probably not going to find anyone on this message board who will tell you that you shouldn't get the game.  I'm sure anyone who didn't like Tropico has long forgotten about it.

I think Ace of Spades is much more subtle than looking for negative comments. He is checking out the intelligence level of the positive comments. Why is the hard corps still here? Because it's really kool, duh, you know, duh, kase I lik it lots - ah kan spread spred blood & guts acros the whol screan. Or because I find it to be an intellectual challenge. It has a high number of variables which the player can not control, therefore understanding the course of play is not a puzzle which can be solved in just a few playings.

CK, it's like you read my mind.  I downloaded the Demo last night and started playing the tutorial.  I started playing around 7:30 and before I knew it, it was 11:30!!  Wife had gone to bed, dog had gone to bed, 11:00 news was over.  This is definately a lot deeper than T2.  I found myself talking to my little Tropicans ("Hey, you're college-educated, go work at the Power Plant.  Not that Corn Farm!!").  I even felt bad when I saw one laying in the middle of the road after dropping over from a stroke.  It is quite a challenge.  Plus the music's not bad  Wink.  I'll be buying this one.  At least I know where I can come with stupid newb questions.

Half-Price Books has been carrying MM in Texas for $6.00.  Maybe one of the PA stores is close to you?  All three PA stores are in Pittsburgh.

Yes! Get it!  It's never the same game twice!  I've been playing for a few years and still love it.

The chief aim of their constitution and government is that, whenever public needs permit, all citizens should be free, so far as possible, to withdraw their time and energy from the service of the body, and devote themselves to the freedom and culture of the mind.  For that they think, is the real happiness of life.                                            Sir Thomas Moore,  "Utopia"
