Hola fellow Tropicans, El Presidente Ricardo has a high respect for hurricanes and other such tropical storms (being that he lives in the middle of Hurricane Alley, experienced Hurricane Andrew in 1992 firsthand, as well as having quite the stressful hurricane season last year in here in South Florida), so he decided to throw together this totally useless piece of information... all of the names of the hurricanes that can possibly hit Republica de Tropico <LOL>! Man, I wish that Break Away would have added scripts to trigger the hurricanes, would have been quite interesting to experiment with. ---cut here--- Abby Able Agnes Alberto Alex Alice Alicia Allen Allison Alma Amelia Amy Ana Andrew Anita Anna Arlene * Arlene Arthur Audrey Babe Baker Barbara Barry Becky Belle Bertha Beryl Bess Beth Betsy Betty Beulah Bill Blanche Bob Bonnie Brenda Bret Camille Candice Candy Carla Carmen Carol Caroline Carrie Celia Cesar Chantal Charley Charlie Chloe Chris Christine Cindy * Cindy Clara Claudette Cleo Connie Cora Daisy Danielle Danny David Dawn Dean Debbie Debby Debra Delia Dennis Diana Diane Dog Dolly Donna Dora Doria Doris Dorothy Dottie Earl Easy Edith Edna Edouard Elaine Elena Ella Ellen Eloise Emily Emmy Erika Erin Ernesto Esther Ethel Eve Evelyn Fabian Faith Faye Felice Felix Fern Fifi Flora Florence Flossie Flossy Floyd Fox Fran Francelia Frances * Frances Frederic Frieda Gabrielle Gail George Georges Gerda Gert Gertrude Gilbert Gilda Ginger Ginny Gladys Gloria Gordon Grace Gracie Greta Gustav Hallie Hannah Harvey Hattie Hazel Heidi Helena Helene Henri Hermine Hilda Holly Hope Hortense How Hugo Humberto Ilsa Inez Inga Ione Irene * Irene Iris Irma Isaac Isabel Isbell Isidore Item Ivan Janet Janice Jeanne Jenny Jerry Jig Joan Jose Josephine Juan Judith Juliet Kara Karen Karl Kate Katie Katrina Keith Kendra King Klaus Kristy Kyle Laura Laurie Lenny Lili Lisa Lois Love Luis Marco Marilyn Martha Mitch ---cut here--- Note that these are directly from the Tropico.exe game file, and that the "*" indicates duplicate names that are also contained in the file. Also note that the names stop at the letter "M"... strange indeed. A few non-Tropican links of "interest" <VBG>: http://www.cmoo.com/~snor/weeds/hurricanes/weeds_saffir_simpson_hurricane_intensity_chart.htmhttp://www.cmoo.com/~snor/weeds/hurricanesP.S. Break Away should have used the embeded storm sound effect contained in the first of the two links ( http://www.cmoo.com/~snor/weeds/hurricanes/hurricane.wav ), verses the lame sounding one that they used for the hurricanes in the game <BG>!

Does the game only uses each letter once per year as in the real world? Or each letter once per game? And even at that rate M is the thirteenth letter. How much of your little island would be left after that? Oh, and I don't think I've said welcome back since your return, so Welcome Back! Always a bunch of cool stuff that is way over my head when you start posting. And wifey never let me keep the Rebel Girl Screensaver.

Ummmm... that one is *not* listed in the Tropico.exe file  P.S. (Just a general observation based on your previous posts) You do realize that there are no plans whatsoever of an upcoming official upgrade patch for this older gem of a game, and that the developers prolly don't even visit these message forums anymore  ?

How much of your little island would be left after that? Hmmm... that warrants further testing, as I have no idea. One thing I do know, it doesn't start with the letter "A", so I have a good hunch that the game prolly selects the hurricane name at random. Aaagggghhhhh! The possibility of **2** Andrews in a single lifetime! Oh, and I don't think I've said welcome back since your return, so Welcome Back! It was reported to the testers for 1.51 that the storms each have a category - 1 through 5. To limit the destructiveness of the storms, the total of the category numbers of storms that happen must not equal more than 10. Therefore, the greatest number of storms in a game may be only 10 - that is, 10 x category 1 storms. That is a highly unlikely happening. The list of names seems absolutely huge to me. I suppose that is a way to try to ensure that random selection will not pick two names with the same initial for the rare case of two storms in one year. BTW, I don't know that any minimum number is guaranteed.

Hmm...that's interesting: the list of hurricane names is at 207 possible names. Hurricane names are on a six year cycle, which would indicate only 156 possible names...perhaps the creators of Tropico just put in a bunch and didn't go past M for the obvious reason that hardly ever does a hurricane season go into the Ms....

Hurricanes stop at "M" because it is really rare to have a 14th Hurricane for the season (In real world) "A" named Hurricanes are the first one of the year "B" named Hurricanes are the second one of the year and so on. Tropical Storms and Tropical Depressins are also named following the letter of the alphabet in the respective order. Such as: Hurricane Alice Tropical Storm Benjamin Hurricane Catherine Hurricane David Tropical Depression Elizabeth

It would be interesting to know where the PopTop developers got their names. Besides the NOAA annual list of names being on a six year cycle for reuse, they also have a list of names which have been retired because of association with a particularly destructive storm. To wit: Agnes David Hazel Alicia Diana Hilda Allen Diane Hortense Allison Donna Hugo Andrew Dora Inez Anita Edna Ione Audrey Elena Iris Betsy Eloise Jane Beulah Fifi Joan Bob Flora Keith Camille Fran Klaus Carla Frederic Luis Carmen Floyd Lenny Carol Gilbert Marilyn Celia Gloria Michelle Cesar Gracie Mitch Cleo Georges Opal Connie Hattie Roxanne Does anyone remember all or most of these storms? Who can remember the most? I suspect that Roxanne must have an unusual history. I suspect that Katrina will be added, eh? Here are some links: http://www.fema.gov/kids/r_hurrnames.htmhttp://www.fema.gov/kids/hunames3.htmFor those who are into trivia.

I think he means the boxer. Mike Tyson was at one time the most feared heavyweight boxer on the planet. But that was a long time ago now.

... But that was a long time ago now. Well I did invite consideration of trivia. But, oh woe and sadness, I forgot those who create instant trivia (or less) with their posts. But then, we now have the image of the mighty boxer vs the omnipresent chicken, all spinning in the eye of a hurricane to determine the meaning of that hurricane. All this at the very end of the season, which is an indication of the bottom of both the menu and the list of important sports. Just now we have the reluctant and confused Ophelia who seems not to be able to decide "to be or not to be" a hurricane - perhaps standing-in for Hamlet. What is the answer to be? We do know that since Roxanne has been sticken from the lists, we shall never have Cyrano and Roxanne engage in a sad, mutual path in a single season. Does anyone recall Katrina's role in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow?

An interesting list CK. Off the top of my head I think I can remember only a few that stand out: Allen, Andrew, David, Mitch but cannot recite the year or location hit. I also recall hearing or reading of Betsy and Camille (New Orleans), Flora, Floyd, Gilbert, Hazel (Toronto among others). Will have to look them up to see if my memory is as good as I think. The others are a blank to me.

MAYBE to 'Sleeping Hollow'! Disney made a cartoon feature The Legend of Sleepy Hollow based on the story written by Washington Irving. The main characters are: - Katrina van Tassel
- Brom Bones
- Ichabod Crane
- Gunpowder, the horse
- A pumpkin carved into a Jack 'O Lantern
The "Legend" involved a headless horseman.

I suspect that ending the list with "M" was related to limiting the length of the program file and a decision that what was included provided enough verisimilitude. I wonder if the list could be "edited" even though it is in the program file. Is the "address" available? If the list could be edited then you could have your own storm.

I wonder if the list could be "edited" even though it is in the program file. Is the "address" available? If the list could be edited then you could have your own storm.
The hurricane names start at hex offset 19AF4C (the "A" in "Able"), and end at hex offset 19B5C8 (the "h" in "Mitch"). You can edit them using any decent hex editor, as long as you don't "spill over" into the next name within the file. Note that the names are padded/seperated by hex zeros (00), some have more than others. Actually, you should be able to make a few of the names longer, as long as there is at least one hex zero (00) padding/seperating the name from the next one. I suspect that ending the list with "M" was related to limiting the length of the program file and a decision that what was included provided enough verisimilitude.
Have a look at the data after the "h" in "Mitch", LOTS of hex zeros (00) in there. I have a hunch that new names could be added after "Mitch", but we would have no idea where the start offset of each new name should be (due to the number of padded zeros being different in between the existing names). Hehe, similar topic, try this out for size <G>. Snag the sound file from my "¥Weeds¥-Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Intensity Chart" -> http://www.cmoo.com/~snor/weeds/hurricanes/weeds_saffir_simpson_hurricane_intensity_chart.htm ( http://www.cmoo.com/~snor/weeds/hurricanes/hurricane.wav ), and rename it to the new filename "Storm.wav". Copy this file to your "Tropico\Data" subdirectory, and enjoy a much nicer sounding hurricane sound -:) BTW, the above also works for all of the ".wav" filenames that are listed in the Tropico.exe file (i.e. fountain.wav, almanac.wav, lumber.wav, furnitur.wav, etc...). Search for ".wav" (minus the quotes) using a hex editor to see 'em all. Simply copy a WAV format sound file to the appropriate filename to your "Tropico\Data" subdirectory to change some of the sound effects -:) P.S. To expedite triggering a random hurricane, start a new map using the "Are you loco" random events setting (the hardest difficulty setting). Save the game directly before the month ends during one of the hurricane season months (August to November). Tropico generates it's random events exactly when the month changes, so if you don't have a hurricane when the month changes, simply press "L ENTER ENTER" in rapid succession to quickly reload the saved game. As an example, I saved a game a hair of a split-second before the month was going to change from October to November, and then simply L+ENTER+ENTER over and over until the hurricane triggered when the month changed to November.
