My people loved me but I p***ed of the Yanks . They said my island was not free but the pop loved me. I got a warning that if I did not change my ways they would invade - and they did! I got no help form Russia and my troops did not fight. The game made me flee Cry

Gee, I wonder if the Yanks start threatening to invade if you allow the Russians to build a base (Monroe Doctrine, right?).  I'm gathering that your policies were mainly communist in nature? How far along was your relationship with Russia? How many elections had you refused?  I know, I should experiment to find out, but there is never enough time....

    Dude that suks for you.  I had that exact same thing with the US, nut i had a foreign ministry build and I was pro-Russian.  It's tight, i just had Russia intall a military base on my island and now i get 14,000 from Russia on Fianancial Aid. Grin

 The Americans were ticked at me, too, even though I had elections every two years and my people were happy.
 The U.S. then sent a warship to harass my island, so I was forced to let the Soviets build a base. (You can't get invaded that way)

Still, that American warship kept sailing back and forth, passing through my docked ships and everything!

I decied to annoy the yanks on purpose (because they are always knicking things - no offense), and I built up my military accordingly.

Then they invade and I don't even get to see a fight!!!!!!!! !


I am now really annoyed!

Back to trying to make my peolpe rebel against me then - it's really hard you know - they love me too much!

Don't feel too bad.... Saddam was in a similar situation (yeah, the Yanks had British help there...), as was Noriega...

My impressions so far:

1- The US are hard to please, and might invade You, even if You are on their side.

2- The Russians are easy to please, at least in the game.

3- If You are pro-US, the Russians will never invade You.

4- If You are pro-Russian, the US will, in time, invade You, if You don´t have a Russian base.

Therefore it follows, that:

1- If You are pro-Russian, ALWAYS let them build a base. It´s the only way to be safe from the Yankees.

2- If You are pro-US, NEVER let them build a base. It serves no purpose except increasing Your risk to get invaded, if they have the smallest reason to feel displeased about You.

The Americans sent a gunship to my island when they weren't happy with how I've been behaving, it just sorta sat there at the coast, threatening-like.

Then years later when my relations with the Americans improved, the gunship still didn't go away... is it there for good?  Should I be concerned? Huh

it shouldnt be there forever, but maybe the Yanquis want to sample some of your fine rum, cigars, & cabaret girls before they go home.

i had a similar problem, so i built a diplomatic office, set it pro-us, then when relations leveled off, i set it to neutral.  worked for me and no more gunship.

i'm also sure that our island's physical proximity to the us and distance from ussr come under consideration.

I've let the U. S. build their base on a couple of my islands, for the rental income.  They've never even sent a gunship, let alone invade.  What are you doing to anger them?

I have had the same experience as you other guys, but I try to use the Foreign Ministry to its maximum. I first turn Pro-US until the russkies relation get cold, then I switch to Neutral. at this time my 3 bureaucrates will have such skill that it will be only a matter of time before both US and Soviet relation pushes at least Cordial. It has not failed in my five last games.Smiley

i tend to follow a neutral policy (more foreign aid), but usually i go for high-quality subsidised housing (low-rent houses for everyone with a job, free country houses for students) which causes the communists to be in love with me. even when i´m on good terms with my capitalists, the commies will like me a lot more, which annoys the usa. coupled with the flaw pompous (c´mon... where´s the fun of being a dictator if you aren´t?), this is usually sufficient for them to be rather rude and threatening on the harder levels. pleasing the yanks seems to be somewhat more rewarding (more tourism, from my experience better results of trade delegatios) but on harder levels, it will be a lot safer to get that russian base asap.

I got the russians to send a gun boat it is hard but is possible i had everythiing to make them made pro-us praise us and trade and aid and if there is any aid from russia destroy it also is it possible to have a russian and americain base on the same island?

It seems I'm a master diplomat compared to you people.My relation ship with America is Perfect Harmony and my relationship with Russia is very close.THe russians love me for my rum and the americans love me for makeing the rum.

Getting the Commies to love me was easy.  I built a bunkhouse for everyone and I kept income levels rather low for educated workers.  I didn't even know the Commies loved me, however, until the US gunship arrived and started running back and forth across my coast.

I acted quickly.  First I built a foreign ministry and recruited a bureaucrat from overseas.  As soon as she arrived, I issued a "praise USA" edict.  Then I set my foreign ministry at "pro-USA policies".

The gunship didn't go away so I built a bank and recruited a banker from overseas.  As soon as the banker settled in, I sent him on a "bribe" errand to the leader of the capitalist faction.  This did the trick.  The Americans were happy and the gunboat floated away.

This game was on the "hard" politics setting.  I never had any trouble with the USA on "moderate" setting.

An unreconstructed war gamer.  You didn't get to see a fight because you were running to get to the row boat with your suitcase full of pilfered money.

What you didn't get to see was your "loyal" army and the population in general setting up welcome parades for the invaders. They were showering the U.S. Marines with flowers, cigars, coffee, and any other goodies available (the Showgirls are very busy)!  They all recognized you for what you were actually worth.  They knew you are a politically deficient egotist who took your people to be puppets or robots who would sacrifice themselves to make you feel good.

For the other players, you have to use the Diplomatic Ministry in coordination with the way you deal with the Capitalist and Communist factions. Gameplay is a complex interplay among several varables. Look at the Manual.
