i'm curious if anyone else has played around with the idea of eliminating other factions altogether. you know, like inviting rev jones over for kool aid...
i've finally managed to win at hard/hard as a paranoid police chief facist. final score was only like 640. :/ towards the end i starting thinking, "hmm, what if i had been playing immagrants out and from the get-go, i had killed anyone with high leadership or low intelligence?"
i also starting thinking, "hmm, and what if i starting killing off the non-believers and tried to run a religious-militant island?"
the only problem i foresee is if there are elections and someone from the religious faction runs against me... is it possible to get more votes from a faction than it's leader?
think i'll go wrap my hand in tin foil now, so i can rule with an iron fist.

It is impossible to remove all factions, obviously.
By eliminating smaller factions, you increase the chances that your election opponent comes from a larger faction (note the logic here).
Even if the members of that faction are happy, strong supporters will be more likely to vote for someone representing their faction than for you, so you will run into election troubles.
Of course, if you deny elections, none of this matters.

OK, perhaps this might seem like a dumb question. I haven't gotten to experimenting with any foul methods of governance yet(umm, all in good time I guess, heh heh), but sometimes, during elections, even though I've always been able to win honestly, I occassionally wondered "Hmm, if my opponent actually stood half a chance of winning against me, couldn't I have him assasinated beforehand, or arrested, branded a heretic even?" So what if u didn't deny elections but resorted to one of the above foul means to "eliminate" ur opponent. I guess I'll try this just to see what happens and reload afterwards. Just curious to see whether it'd be any better or worse than calling off elections, and how long it'd take before ppl started feeling particularly disenfranchised.

LOL!! This entire thread is funny.
It's a small world, folks. If you decided to eliminate an entire faction that hates you, you are going to kill a lot of people who are related to people who DO like you. Then those people who used to like you whose relatives got killed will then hate you, and you'll have to kill them, and so on and so on, until you don't have much of an island anymore.
Don't try mass execution. Don't try killing your opponent either. Try if you must, but as Peron said, you won't like it.

Oh, I absolutely agree. I've never needed to even "rig" my election outcomes, even after 50+ yrs. Just was curious to see how bad an effect it'd create... I 'spose if it was one of the only things that one as El Presidente could do to retain power, then these foul methods would be better than being booted out of the palace, eh Senors? BwaHAHA! Like I've said so many times: I weel let thee COWS rule een Tropeeco beefore I let thees FEELTHY peasants, probably backed by thos treecheroos Yanqui gringos or thos coommie peenkos set foot near my palace! General! Don't stand there like a drooleeng eediot! Mobilize our soldiers and... NOT NOW Fast Federico! Your seelly advice ees the LAST theeng I need now you stu.... eh? The general ees planneenk a... and they've keeled alll the cows just to spite me? Insolent b*stards! I weel have their heads for thi.... Heh, why hello el general. Aiee! Ju look a little pale, are ju ok? What a nice gun ju have there, no need to thank me for the nice weapons I bought u by showing me the barrel so close to the meedle of my eyes, it's no problemo, I was glad to buy ju the best guns! Yes sir me amigo, ju can always count on - !BANG!- ...Fast Federico! The general has shot heemself in the head!! O, how unfortunate<g>.... O well, now we must find another general... Now go get thee maid before he bleeds all over my nice carpet! Ahh jes, tis good to be El Presidente

I guess you could get the population down to 0 by using the muerte command... then killing immigrants by the same method who import a faction you don't like. Would be interesting to see if they develop new factions throughout their life on tropico... hmm.

Oh.. opens another question though.... if your island population is 0, will there be elections? If the population is 1, who will win?

Here's a question related to faction elimination. My relationship with the commie faction was average. On a lark I decided to whack the leader of that faction. After it was all done, my relationship with the commies remained unchanged. You'd think they would be hopping mad! Is the relationship with a faction only a macro concern? That is, as long as you are enacting policies favorable to a faction they won't care who you waste?
Another question is that the commie leader had exceptional leadership skills, her successor had lame leadership skills. How does this impact the game if at all?
And finally, only the family and witnesses of a hit get less happy right? No one else minds that they have to walk passed a stinking corpse in the street on the way to work?

Answers to your questions so far as I have observed during my gameplay as a muderous el presidente. 1. I have whacked the leader of a faction who was unfavorably inclined towards me. The next leader was actually more favorably inclined towards me (because of his lesser political leanings. I was playing a communist and he was a pretty good communist in addition to being intellectual, religious or whatever he was). The relationship with the faction seemed pretty much unchanged even though this individual seemed to like me more. 2. The attributes of an individual only seem to come into play if that person should ever become a rebel. 3. The answer so far as I can tell is yes and no. Only the family and witnesses have a direct lowering of their respect for you. I can't say for sure, but I think I have seen the respect for el presidente by the militarist guards actually improve after such a hit. Nevertheless, if you look at your overall respect level (check the almanac) after using the eliminate edict, your overall respect will be down from whatever it was before. I tend not to use the eliminate edict in games that I care about continuing. There are too many other ways to deal with potential troublemakers that have a better impact on my game. Fired soldiers can still work as priests or factory workers, for example. As for the stinking corpse... the locals don't seem to notice them much. Even with the flies buzzing.

For those of you who are annoyed by the intelectual faction there is a solution. I was running a very oppressive game and the intelectuals complained of low liberty. I issued the "BOOK BBQ" Edict, Eliminated Strong supporters of the faction, and arrested the leader for polictical effect.
Here are some tips for oppressive ruling
1. Keep Good relations with military - Superior Housing,Pay, Entertainment, and services 2. Aviod close relations with the USA (they want more liberty) 3. If US Turns Ugly try to please them or get russia alliance 4. DO not try to get rid of Commie faction it is very large and dangerous 5. Lots of Guard posts and Statues 6. Choose Installed By KGB to replinish military ranks quick after coup, uprising, or soldiers just quit

It would take to long and your people would start to become angry with you. Also, if you didn't have any imigrants or educated workers, you would never have enough money for anything

All bloodthirsty, 'pull wings off of flies' players can quit dreaming.
Yes, you can expend a lot of the Treasury on "Elimination" edits, or even use the 'MUERTE' cheat to take the people with particular faction support indicators off the map. Every person has a score for all the factions (check the Almanac lists). The scores are divided into quarters so people are ranked: 3x+, 2x+, 1x+ and "detractors."
However, the game code will not allow any faction to be totally erased from the map. You can not force every person into the "detractor" score rank.
Yes, your persistent efforts will greatly weaken a faction. But it will also greatly weaken you.
It's a bad gameplay idea. Drop it and learn about the game.
The faction's overall "attitude" trails that of the faction leader. So over time, the faction and faction leader will be pretty much the same as far as the faction goals go. The leader will have personal goals that mean nothing as far as the faction goals go.
