Today Tropico... tomorrow the world!!!

« on: 02/11/02 at 06:37 AM »

I was sadly disappointed that an edict that would allow me to take the offensive against rebels was not included in PI.  Hoepfully, this error of omission will be rectified.

1)  When this edict is issued, a menu should appear that ask me what I would like to do.

    a.  Commit 1/3, 2/3's or all of my army to anti-rebel
         operations.
    b.  Hire foreign mercenaries

2)  The amount of soldiers commit to the anti-rebel operation, will determine how much liberty is reduced.  Also, it will lower the happiness of factions opposed to El Prez's rule.  A the same time, it will raise the happiness of factions that support El Prez.

3)  When the number of rebels fall below a pre-determined count, another menu should pop up that ask me what I want to do at that point.

    a.  Set a new percentage of troops involved in anti-rebel operations
    b.  Return all troops to barracks
    c.  Diascharge mercenaries
    d.  Continue the operation

The police should be given some role in dealing with rebels, when this edict is in effect.

You'd probably also want to specify how long the offensive should last, what direction it should advance in, and at what friendly-casualty level it should be canceled.

Maybe now you can start to see why we didn't get it in...  Wink

BAMac... oh, I never thought that it would be easy.  I guess that I'm being unfair and holding Tropic/PI to the standards that exist in other games of the same genre.  Personally, I would glad trade the new music and some of the new tourist buildings for a Eliminate Rebels/Search & Destroy edict.  To me, the game is incomplete without the ability to conduct offensive operations against the rebels.  It limits my options as a ruthless dictator, far to much.

LOL! Nah we wouldn't eat you, we need you to do the better expansion.  Grin

Seriously, we've been leveling a lot of criticism at you guys and I for one am glad I'm not seeing too many defensive posts. I'm sure you put in plenty of work on the ex-pak. We don't hate you or anything...some of us would just have liked different stuff. Maybe the next ex-pak, huh?  Wink

Huh? Say "yes" Mac/Phil/anybody! Cheesy

BTW, as long as we're on the bugs board and you're a scenario person, in my Solitude scenario I don't have any docks. And the farm maintenance is positive. Yep positive!! Gives you about a couple of K a year per FARM!!....I don't understand it! :-/  I'm thinkin' its a bug, because I sure didn't do anything to make it do that! Sad

Any clue?

Well, in that case I accept!

Thanks for your observation. If your list had come out a month or two earlier, you'd have probably seen more of what you're looking for. And we did cover some of it anyway, like the social security edict (which addresses your indigent-housing problem).

Another ex-pak is entirely dependent on the publisher -- i.e., on sales. You can vote with your $$, post wonderfully positive reviews Grin, and hope for the best. I'm sure we at Breakaway would be glad to do it, but it's not our call.

Hmm, no docks yet positive farm revenues? Sounds like it might be a bug -- or maybe you have another dock tucked away somewhere else on the island that you forgot about? Grin

First off, no one told us there was going to be an ex-pak. We would hav hurried the list otherwise. See my posts elsewhere speculating that Poptop are really British Secret Agents and Tropico is really classified material....Lips Sealed

Second off, yes the Social Security is good. Cheesy

Third off, abstaining is also voting yes? Tongue There speak my dollars for now.... Cheesy I could still be persuaded tho. Grin

And last but not the least, my briefing says not to build a dock. In my scenarios, when you are told not to build a dock, you don't build a dock. Of course, you can TRY to build a dock, you might catch a glimpse of it when its complete...from your rowboat... Wink

<insert evil scenario writer laugh here> more power...need more power!!

But then you would have had a hurried -- i.e., flawed -- list that we couldn't have trusted anyway! Grin

No, in this case abstaining is also voting no. Grin

I notice you dodged the part about Poptop being British Secret Agents....SO IT'S TRUE, I KNEW IT!!!  Shocked Shocked Shocked Grin

Hmmm, working code is better than pretty code that doesn't meet deadlines and a hurried list that gets used is a lot better than a perfect list that never gets used.  Tongue

No?  Wink

...  Maybe now you can start to see why we didn't get it in --

And that is the developer's sarcastic answer to El Malo's fixation on playing a counterinsurgency game.

El Malo harped on his demands for huge elaborations of the military aspects of the game until -- how else to say it -- he became tiresome. If his demands had been included, the game would have become nothing more that a poorly done Insurgency war game with the military aspect completely overpowering all other parts of the game.

Further, his prescription for the army would require a very great elaboration of the AI for the Rebels to have any balanced play at all. As the game stands, the Rebels represent the very initial stages of an organized insurgency where the rebellion has little to no organization and no leadership. The building attacks have only the most rudimentary strategic sequence.

If he had troubled to provide an outline of how the Rebels need to be improved, it would have been evident that all the army vs relbel elaboration would be completely outside the scope of the game.
