No matther how many inns/taverns/casino's and the like I build, my pirates get more misrable over time.  Also, I can't figure out how to staff all of the entertainment spots I do build.  Are there any rules of thumb on the ratios to pirates to places.  Also, how do I confirm that I am producing enough grog, rum, pastries, etc to keep the boy's spirits up?

Sailing the wide accountancy

As long as they're not always full, you've probably got enough entertainment establishments. But it's a good idea to check that your establishments are catering to the appropriate pirate rank. Make sure your pirates have enough money to visit, as well--employ them as overseers or donate gold if necessary.

Remember that your pirate areas should have high anarchy and defence ratings--place decor as needed.

And housing helps with rest and stashing satisfaction, at the cost of a LOT of land area and wasted pirate time.

Finally, pirates do need time off between cruises to visit said establishments, or they will eventually get cranky. But they don't make you any money in port, so don't leave 'em in too long.  Wink

It's fun to charter an accountant
And sail the wide accountancy,
To find, explore the funds offshore
And skirt the shoals of bankruptcy!

It can be manly in insurance.
We'll up your premium semi-annually.
It's all tax deductible.
We're fairly incorruptible,
We're sailing on the wide accountancy!

Hi Mob

If you havnt already done so try working through the campaign episodes.  They lead you through the game gradually which may help develop  your understanding of the problem.

If still stuck how about a screenie.....

Yes,  if they are always full then there are pirates who want that entertainment but can't get it.  As many entertainment places as pirates is my rule.  Gambling requires few staff per places so certainly build enough gambling places.

Skilled cooks and servers increase food/drink entertainment establishments quality (and skilled wenches).  Besides you might need those skilled workers later for building more advanced entertainment.

  Spanish pirates need more companionship.

Look at the disgruntled or skeptical pirates to see where they are lacking.  Could be only that they don't have enough money.

The Hedonist faction seem to spend more money on entertainment.  Bad news if a captain is a Hedonist,  he'll spend money fast and still not be happy unless he gets stuff like rum,  cigars and courtisan.

Post a saved game file here (game version 1.2) and I'll have a look at it. Wink
