Since it's debut, the Pokémon franchise has been met with much fanfare. Although Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic: The Gathering certainly have their substantial niches, even their combined popularity isn't enough to dethrone the legacy Nintendo has successfully established. However, it would seem that each new installment hasn't really offered any significant improvements or perks to make all that monster collecting worthwhile. That is, until Pokemon Pinball entered the market.
I must admit that I've ultimately chose to never play anyPokémon titles (and yet I was secretly watching the animated series). Chalk it up to being more concerned with personal image than indulging my recreational apetite. Pokemon Pinball thankfully rolled into my heart and since has captivated me with its compelling gameplay.
This edition puts a relatively innovative spin towards all that endless "catch em all" routine, transforming a classic premise into something wholly new and entertaining. Retaining the traditional formula, fans of the series should feel right at home. Pokemon Pinball masterfully mastefully delivers fast, flipper action graced by solid ball physics, control and impressive level designs. Players choose between two distinct board designs, respectively dubbed Ruby and Sapphire. There's an extensive host of Pokémon characters to catch (over 200 in total); which you'll unlikely accomplish through one session. Progression is contingent upon evolving characters and acquiring new power-ups/items to reach respective bonus stages. There's not too many noteworthy sound effects, aside from Pikachu's trademark phrase "Piiiikachu!", a modest element nevertheless.
This package boasts a universal cool factor that will appeal to Pokémon and pinball fans alike. Although it's lacks the same, fast paced intensity as Sonic Pinball, you won't find a more appealing game suited for gamers of all ages.
