PS2 NBA Jam Developer: Acclaim | Publisher: Acclaim

Type: Action Players: 1-4
Difficulty: Intermediate Released: 09-23-03

While EA and Visual Concepts continue to go head-to-head in the battle to achieve the ultimate basketball simulation, Acclaim has opted to fade back with an alternative direction. Now you can enjoy 3-on-3 arcade basketball action thanks to this updated installment to the classic NBA Jam license. Essentially, much of the fundamental elements remain the same --- take it to the hardwood, unleash dynamic dunks, and shut your opponent down. For an added spark, players can also execute hot spots and juke maneuvers - and yes, the classic big head modes (among others) have been retained in this edition. Best of all, Tim Kitzrow - the original voice of NBA Jam returns, featuring a nice blend of new and classic "off-color" commentary including "He's heating up" and "Boomshakalaka!!!!"

Perhaps the only minor quip I have with the game is the graphic engine. While the flow of the game moves exceptionally smooth, the character models just don't look as cool in 3D despite the massive list of moves featured throughout the game. (Perhaps I am just a purist at heart who refuses to dimiss my love for the PlayStation classic, NBA Jam: Tournament Edition).

Overall, the multiplayer mode, downloadable content along with the extensive list of hidden secrets by far, qualify as the game's most evident selling points. Speaking of which, Acclaim would've scored more points with basketball fans (and me for that matter) if they had implemented online play for the PS2 and Xbox versions, respectively. At best, Jam is great for a rental to enjoy with friends, but isn't worth the price of admission for your existing library.
