PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.

If I absolutely must talk about a videogame you'll see it in here.

  1. Back from vacation.

by , 30 Apr 2012 at 11:06 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
My idea of a vacation is any time that isn't spent in Winter Haven. I've spent three years and six months in this city and I hate it. Really the fact that I decided to get into writing after just six months of living there should tell you all you would care to know regarding my opinion of this hole. Anyway it was a good time even though I spent most of it just hanging out with my family and watching movies.

First off I'm sure you're all just heartbroken about the lack of "Arcade ...

  2. Arcade Appreciation April #12 - Time Crisis 4

by , 24 Apr 2012 at 03:29 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
Time Crisis is one of the longest standing gun-game franchises around. Aside from the four main releases there have been a handful of spin-offs like Project Titan, Crisis Zone, and Razing Storm. The basic idea is the same amongst them all. Stop the terrorists, Jump in an out of cover to reload & dodge attacks, you're being timed. Not much else to it really, you get higher scores through accuracy, time, and doing a lot of combos(shooting many people multiple times in a short period).

  3. Arcade Appreciation April #11 - Caveman Ninja

by , 23 Apr 2012 at 12:33 AM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
This Data East action-platformer is...well you know what? Maybe I just shouldn't waste my time talking about it.

Caveman Ninja is...obsolete. It's one of those times where a company makes a game that is better than its predecessor in enough ways that gamers may as well forget the original ever happened. Why play Caveman Ninja when you can play...Spin Master? Yep that game with the two dudes from Dashin' Desperadoes. It's like Data East decided they wanted a replacement. They saw ...

  4. Arcade Appreciation April #10 - Dynamite Duke

by , 17 Apr 2012 at 06:48 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
I have about an hour and a half before House of the Dead 4 finishes downloading. So let's kill a bit of time talking about this underrated title from Seibu Kaihatsu.

This game combines elements of Cabal/NAM-1975 and Crossed Swords. Certainly it is an odd mix but this game works very well. Basically as you trudge through each of the nine stages you'll be assaulted by various soldiers and their heavy artillery. When they're far away you can gun them down but if they get close you gotta ...

  5. Arcade Appreciation April #9 - Crude Buster

by , 17 Apr 2012 at 11:31 AM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
New York is under attack by Mutants. Are you a crude enough dude to rescue New York?

Doesn't quite have the same ring to it doesn't it? Crude Buster was known as "Two Crude Dudes" here in the US, apparently since it may as well be a sequel to Bad Dudes. It's the future and the key to stopping "Big Valley" (such a silly name for a game, maybe they should be wearing sweaters around their necks and play badminton) is in a couple of guys who like to say "whatta ...

  6. Arcade Appreciation April #8 - Boogie Wings

by , 16 Apr 2012 at 12:37 AM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
Also known as "The Great Ragtime Show", this shooter by Data East is not one you can approach like any other. I guess the closest comparison is Wolf Fang, also by the same company. Basically you start off in a biplane with a hook attached. You can use this hook to grab objects such as bombs, enemies, and other vehicles, then toss them around. Also the levels are designed to be far more grounded and detailed than the average shooter. Stages commonly take place in city streets, inside of ...

  7. Arcade Appreciation April #7 - Sly Spy

by , 13 Apr 2012 at 01:02 AM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
Data East's Sly Spy features the easiest boss in arcade game history. Basically he's an Oddjob kinda fellow who throws his hat. All you do is duck his hat, then stand up and shoot him. Okay yes you do have to perform this action more than once to take him down but really that's all there is to it. The boss never decides to throw his hat low to the ground or in some sort of wonky angle. Maybe this was supposed to be a parody of the movie Goldfinger. You see, if Bond actually had a gun when he was ...

  8. Arcade Appreciation April #6 - Warrior Blade

by , 10 Apr 2012 at 11:24 AM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
So many Taito games. Is this a theme or something?
No I'm just a huge fan of Taito. Of all the arcade devs out there I think Taito has the most style and creativity. In terms of art-direction, plot, music, and all that other non-essential stuff I mean. Actually non-essential might not be the right word. After all the point of an arcade game is to make money, and there needs to be something there to attract the player's attention.

Warrior Blade is the third and final entry ...

  9. Arcade Appreciation April #5 - Crime City

by , 08 Apr 2012 at 01:51 AM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
Taito's Crime City is the product of one too many buddy cop movies and a complete disregard for protocol. The main characters of this game are the kind whose badges are frequently threatened to be taken away. Yes they are surrounded by criminals and yes they all have their weapons out but come on, after the fifteen minutes it takes to get through this game half the world's criminal population has gotten blown away. Oh right...this is an arcade game. Forget I said anything.

    On the ...

    MrMaskaman
    ArcadeExtreme

    VesperArcade
    TKDGoiram
    Smraedis
    IcarusFW
AcidGlow - Okay they're far from awesome at arcade games but they're pretty much the only ones doing co-op vids.

  11. Arcade Appreciation April #4 - D.D. Crew

by , 05 Apr 2012 at 11:27 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
D.D. Crew? Is it a brawler or a porno company? With a name like that I almost expect them to become a sponsor in the beatemup game community. This is one of those games that you just won't see anymore. First off name another videogame that contains samples of Bobby Brown, Prince, and...seriously just listen to this track from the final stage. How the heck are you gonna beat up some bosses when all you can think about is sex? Another thing. Back then and possibly still today game companies just didn't ...

  12. Arcade Appreciation April #3 - The Ninja Warriors

by , 04 Apr 2012 at 01:44 AM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
Back when I was younger, Ninja Warriors was the sort of game I'd watch and not play. This was mainly because it scared the hell out of me. You're essentially playing as a terminator-ninja and when you fail you explode piece by piece. Sure you're fighting to stop a tyrannical president but you never really forget that you're in control of what is essentially a weapon, an un-feeling android that could very well turn on its masters and wipe out the human race.

    Granted it'd probably ...

  13. Arcade Appreciation April #2 - Cadash

by , 03 Apr 2012 at 12:12 AM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
The rarest genre to be found in an arcade is the RPG. Even variants such as the Action-RPG are typically non-existent. The reasons why that is are quite obvious. In 1989 Taito took a chance and developed one of the few action-RPGs for the arcades. While there isn't any way to save your game and the adventure will take less than an hour, the basic ideas are in place. You choose from four different classes and go through five stages. Along the way you'll access shops that sell both equipment and items, ...

  14. Arcade Appreciation April #1 - Twin Cobra

by , 02 Apr 2012 at 11:19 AM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
You may recall the beginning of Dodonpachi. The first sign of adversity is a battalion of harmless tanks that you cut through with a massive laser. This is not only satisfying in the visceral sense but if you're a fan of Toaplan you'll realize that hey, you've finally moved on. Tanks are no longer a threat right? Okay sure you're still liable to get killed by a bullet and it may be one that came from a tank. However now that you're in the Danmaku/Bullethell/???? age your immediate worry is more ...

  15. If there's one thing I haven't forgotten about is Arcade Appreciation April.

by , 01 Apr 2012 at 10:20 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
Yes sirs and madams it's still happening. First I have to finish up work on Warriors Orochi 3 and Yakuza: Dead Souls.

Decided to put together a preliminary list of arcade games I'm probably going to look at over the course of April and then some.

    Altered Beast
    Alien Syndrome
    Battle Circuit
    Cadash
    Cliffhanger with Edward Randy
    Crime City
    Dead Connection
    Deathsmiles 1
    Demon's World
    Dimahoo
    Dungeons ...
