Back from vacation.

My idea of a vacation is any time that isn't spent in Winter Haven. I've spent three years and six months in this city and I hate it. Really the fact that I decided to get into writing after just six months of living there should tell you all you would care to know regarding my opinion of this hole. Anyway it was a good time even though I spent most of it just hanging out with my family and watching movies.

First off I'm sure you're all just heartbroken about the lack of "Arcade Appreciation April" updates. Thankfully while April may be over, Arcade Appreciation is not. I've just been busy with work. Usually by the time I get off work the last thing I feel like doing is playing a videogame, or at least one that requires a semblance of effort to get anything out of it.

During my vacation I spent a little time playing Radiant Historia. Currently I'm thinking: "I spent all that time waiting to get this game for a non-ridiculous price and it doesn't even feel worth it!" Thoughts can change and sometimes RPGs can take awhile to get going. Therefore I'll hold off on writing anything that might stick, at least until I get some more time in.

I actually watched a bit of TV and saw the Prototype 2 commercial twenty or so times. It's...the worst thing I've ever seen. I don't listen to Johnny Cash but I have seen his video for "Hurt" and it's quite excellent. Using his cover of the song to promote a videogame strikes me as a very Activision-thing to do. As far as I'm concerned, when Cash covered that song he basically made it his own. Even though I didn't know a thing about him in just those few minutes I saw someone who was thoroughly broken and filled with regrets. What Activision did was take a massive dump all over him and his legacy and for what? For some idiotic live-action commercial starring some guy nobody is ever going to care about.

The first Prototype game was the stupidest thing anyone could ever imagine. It's about some virus with a human form who has a hundred dozen superpowers. Typically these all boil down to new and exciting ways to kill people in fashions most absurd. It's not unexpected to play through this game and wipe out 2/3rds of New York's population. So the main character of Prototype 2 not only discovers that his wife was killed by the virus but later on he becomes infected with it. Wow what a sad story, one that I've likely heard a few million times by the end of the first game. Granted those millions probably didn't inherit the powers of the virus but c'mon, it's still nothing worthy of "Hurt". Also while I haven't played this sequel I'm going to take a wild guess and say that the main character is likely going to run around the city killing everyone in numerous ways. Am I supposed to relate to or pity this guy? That's likely not going to happen I'm afraid.

So yeah, I'm really disgusted by that commercial. It's impossible to believe that anyone would approve of this tripe but I guess it's necessary for that all-important first week's worth of sales. Hopefully when that time has passed I'll have forgotten that Hurt was once associated with not just a videogame, but one that encapsulates all of the garbage people are constantly deriding the games industry over.

Also like hopefully many others I have probably put way too much thought into this piece of crap. Oh well.
