I picked up one of those free Nintendo preview DVDs at EB. It's cool to see lots of videos but if Nintendo is willing to make this disc then why aren't they giving away free playable demos too? Or at least sell them?

They are....in Japan.
I expect them to be slow with the whole "demo disc" thing. Afterall, they were slow to the whole "disc" thing
EDIT- I think they chose to go with DVD's because that way people without a gamecube could watch them and potentially be sold on a gamecube.
The Animal Crossing ads (along with the other commercials) are my favorite thing on these discs (the history of metroid does nothing for me). Anyway, is it true that Zelda is hidden on this, because I found it odd that it was absent.
I understand why they chose the DVD format(it seemed wrong watching it on my PS2), I'm just anxious for Cube demos.
Zelda isn't on it? I guess they are really sticking to that "you CAN'T watch it, you can only play it!" philosophy.
FYI, Gamestop distributes them too...and yeah, it sucks that Nintendo couldn't make these available to ppl here stateside. Like Kinopio already stated, that stuff is plentiful in Japan. But every so often, companies like Sony and Microsoft grace us with some playable media...and Nintendo forces us to sit "patiently" and await their releases.

I dig the preview DVD, it's a step in the right direction for Nintendo, it might be a few years too late, but it's better than nothing.
Yeah, it's true about the Zelda footage. There's also bits of Final Fantasy, F-Zero, 1080 and more. Here's how to get it:

From the main menu go to the view other titles option at the bottom and click on it, then when you get to the new menu, click on Return to Main Menu. back at the main menu, highlight Mario Sunshine, and push left. The circle the gamecube is in should be highlighted. choose that, and you'll see new footage for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Zelda, 1080 snowboarding, and a few other games.
