But......OMG....he's a NINJA!
Now this comment I don't get, since it's completely false to me. I do almost nothing but smooth dash circling around enemies, and many complain there's too much Tate (although it's required for keeping one alive).Quote:
I had assumed I'd be doing smooth invisi-circles around a group of enemies and slicing them all in one sweet strike, but the game is really just a mediocre beat-em-up that doesn't take advantage of the gimmick as much as it could have.
The dogs with the swords annoy the hell out of me. They are the only enemy I have trouble not getting hit by.
Well.. I got Shinobi on the 19th along with PS2. When I first played it I was in a lousy mood because the PS2 I got had a defect and I was super-pissed-off.... So, my first gameplay session was tainted and I didn't think I liked the game much..... I didn't come back to the game for at least a week or so..... I got pissed off at how craptacular RAD was and I needed to try something different. Wow, what a difference... I have been playing hardly anything but Shinobi since then. This game is spectacular. I am only up to stage 4a.. but I am loving every minute of it.
It's not easy though.. it really hard but so far it feels like a "fair hard". You can't cruise through the game. You really need to refine your skills as you go along and learn how to use various weapons and techniques. There seems to be just the right amount of challenge and frustrating to make the game rewarding. I just did my first Tate boss kill on the boss from 3a... Oh man was that rewarding. He was kicking my ass repeatedly... then I walked up, did a shuriken blast, slashed those goddamn dogs, and then tate'd him.. wow it was sweet... It seems like each level makes you add something new to your skill set. I think it was 2a where I realised the benefits of tossing shurikens.
I also appreciate just how well made the game is. It feels really polished because of the learning curve, the scoring system, the coins, the depth of gameplay and technique. I don't usually get interested in straight-up action games but I love the gameplay and the style and atmosphere in this game. It's pure class. I can't say enough good things about this game... I'm really loving it.
:)
Well, We still yet to beat the last level. I want to like this game, and I like the challenge it offers, but the damn camera system annoys the hell out of me. As I said before, Hotsuma is just too damn fast for camera to follow him right, so you end up not seing most of the action, or enemies, which can kill you.
It is a glorified hack and slash. The 'dash' effect is something new, but it is essentially the 'jump' or 'run' command of a beat'em up. Shinobi is a great game for a very flat appeal: You kill things.
The story is completely ronchi and isn't too entertaining to me, the cutscenes are downright laughable due to their cheesy content. The cutscenes atleast look great (aside from a few animations I don't like). The game itself has a good atmosphere about it, but Ninja totting dogs are, again, cheesy.
I also find the sorcerer boss to be very weak. I don't know, I'm not a fan of the 'story'.
As a game, and only a game and not an game with a cheesy story, it plays very well. I have never died from poor hit detection, or clumsy controls. Infact, I've only ever died in the game by falling down pits with uncalculated jumps or me not seeing the wall to dash on. It's a great game, for what it does. Overall, this game, to me, is not worth full price. It's fun, it's shallow and it's more of a rental or purchase for 20 bucks, just my opinion of the game itself.
One thing about the game that stands out is the bosses. They are all really fun, even if fighting a helicopter with a sword while you try to manipulate the camera is abit drab. It's like they couldn't find the right solution for the boss fight, so they just threw the camera control to the player to cover it up: "They're controlling the camera, therefor it's their fault" type excuse.
Good game. I would give it a 6.8/10 or something like that, maybe just a 6 with 5 being average.
Oh and I like how if you kill all the enemies within a certain time you get a little cutscene, but in most cases they give you a horrible angle, too horrible to enjoy your handiwork!!
Yeah, how dare they do the smart thing and allow manual control! Those fights would've been so much better if they had been like DMC or LotR:TTT and enemies could smack you from off-screen because you have no way to see in certain directions!Quote:

BTW: Lock-on works wonders with the camera.
I usually save the shurikens for these bastards. When I see them coming, it's Shuriken Burst time for me.Quote:

Shinobi on PS2 is pretty good... it reminds me somewhat of Revenge of Shinobi crossed with a little bit of a "Golden Axe 3D". The Psychic Force 2012 style lock-on dash is a great addition.
$48 was a fair price for it in my opinion. Currently I'm on stage 5-A.
No game is perfect... if I had something to complain about, it would be Hotsuma's speed when he is locked-on to an opponent- he will walk rather than run, even if you have the analog stick at a full tilt.
gameoverdude, I guess you slow down because when you use the lock on you're surrounded by enemies, so you wouldn't want to run around in that situation. If you need to get to someone fast, rapid dashing is just as fast if not faster than the run.
Anyone got solid tips for the final boss? I'm not talking about tating then just hit the guy kind of help, even ECM didn't go beyond that for the Shinobi guide. I can tell what type of spell he'll do by his voice, and I'm getting better at avoiding his helper's attacks, so I got that down. My biggest gripe is that teleport attack he does, I can never tell when he is going to do it. I'll be running around hitting the peices of paper like always, and then he'll pop up and kick my ass. Dashing away from him sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't for who knows what reasons. One time out of the at least thirty times I've fought him I was just one hit away from victory, so I know it can be done.
I don't agree with this for a very simple reason. I don't like hack & slash games... but I really like Shinobi.Quote:

It's definitely an action game but it has a lot of strategy and skill. The first time I played it I was kind of bored because it seemed like just a hack and slash. But once I learned how to play I saw how much strategy was involved in figuring out how to use your various skills and how to defeat certain enemies. How to perform tate. How to take down the bosses. Plus there are the unlockables and a scoring/grading system. The game appeals to me in the same way that shmups do as a matter of fact.
I think maybe this game is a different experience for different people - depending on how you play it.
