o_O ???!
I assume it'll be a "pay to play" service, no? I'd go visit planetgamecube, but I don't feel like wrestling with popups. :D
Wow, that's an honest-to-God surprise right there.
And so Sega will potentially become an empire. Sega has potentially hit the motherload right here. Imagine if they do something like XBox live but allow you to play crossplatform. If it becomes popular enough then everyone will have to play sega a cut to get on their popular online service and they can profit from fees like Microsoft plans to with Live.
Exactly. Not to mention, Sega is not limited by the sales of a certain piece of hardware. The combined GC and PS2 userbase is massive.Quote:

One of the smartest business moves I've seen from Sega in a long time...
Still doesn't mean I'd be willing to shell out $10 a month for any of the online games out right now though. :/
Hah! Maybe that's the megaton announcement everybody has a boner about!
No, they are developing a middleware solution called SNAP that they are going to sell to developers. Like an online-play dev kit, with billing, server and other facilities that makes it easy for them to set up online games, this isn't a service like SegaNet, at least that is what I took from the article.
Thoughts?
Nice job, Sega.
There is a (nice flash) page of info right here: http://www.sega.com/business/
SNAP = Sega Network Applicaion Package. Just in case some are wondering.
from http://www.sega.com/business/SNAP_info.pdf
"SNAP is a set of tools, protocols, and libraries used to create an online gaming network. SNAP’s technology is flexible and modular, so developers can use what they need to fit their own systems and requirements. You can lay the foundation for your network using SNAP’s core components, then build on it with optional services to enhance functionality, facilitate revenue, or strengthen community."
I think it sounds very cool, though it is very different than Xbox Live.
