Messing Around With My Tablet

Alrighty, so I got a Wacom tablet a couple days ago and have been dicking around with it. It's tough learning to draw without looking at the same area my hand's in, but the knowledge that it will make my life easier in the working of webcomics I'm doing pushes me onward.

In any case, here are a couple things I created today and yesterday. The first three were done using the freeform pen tool, I'm currently trying to tame that to where I'll be able to do a Frank Miller-style. I have a few things done where it actually looks like that (although they're cutesy people, so it gives it a wierd effect), I'll upload and post them later. The fourth was just a quick screwing around that I did for about five-ten minutes a few minutes ago.

Very sketchy, but nice to look at. I, too, have a Wacom Tablet and enjoy it alot. Using the opacities makes gradiants a breeze!

I thought about buying a cintique, but I think I'll get a wireless airboard from viewsonic instead. If you like graphire and intuos drawing, you'll love drawing on a pen monitor. That'll also address the eye hand offset problem. You should look into the Airboards at viewsonics sight, they're pricey but just check out their features.

Andrew: Yeah, I naturally draw very sketchy which doesn't translate immediately to the tablet very well. Anyone have any clue how to smooth out lines, I'm pretty sure Photoshop can do that but I learned it so long ago I can't remember a damn thing.

what's a reasonable size for a tablet?

4x5 is very workable, but anything larger is just as welcome. Though I would stick to 4x5 unless you have a job that requires or will pay for a larger one.

btw, where have you been, shingo? You're missed among us. ^^

Well, if you want to start with the inking (at least basic outline, from what I've tried), my tablet's surface is a plastic sheet that can be lifted. Lift it up, slip a drawing under there, and trace it right into whatever drawing program you prefer. It's a little odd and takes some time to line things up just right, but it works at least until you get good drawing while looking at the screen (the toughest part for me with a tablet). I'm just too used to looking at the paper when I draw...
