C64's 20th birthday!

I was just browsing through the GA forum and I noticed that someone had posted about this a few days ago. I dont think many of you actually had the system , it was more of a home computer than a console. As far as I can remember(and I can hardly remember anything) the Vic 20 was a clone of this system.
Anyways, most of the heavy hitters were western made games(back in the day when EA were realy great) and 8 bit arcade ports , which were ussually superior to ther NES and SMS counterparts.

A few of my favourites

A bards tale/Pool of radiance: Great RPG's back then , gameplay was more advanced than the NES and SMS bunch.....but now they are seem unfun and boring.
Way of the exploding fist: Best 8 bit fighter ever.
Ikari warriors: Who doesnt know about SNK's classic shooter? As far as I can remember it was superior to the NES rev.
R type: My favourite vert shmup of all time
Operation wolf: As far as I can remember , it was the best lightgun game back then. One of Taito's best.
Gradius: The series(excluding salamander and parodius) was never all that great , but it was still a decent game.
Usagi Yujimbo: Way ahead of its time , plays like an 8 bit version of recent ps2 samurai game.
Shinobi:Superior to SMS version?? I dont remember at all.
Space Harriers: What a fucking awesome game.
Ghosts and goblins: Easily the best in the series , and one of the best plattformers ever. Its also one of my top NES games and I've put the capgen disc as one of my top ps1 games.
Great Gianna Sisters: Mario and Megaman are the only 8 bit platts that can beat this gem.
Outrun:still one of my top 5 racers.
Salamander:Best konami shmup ever.
Bubble bobble: Addictive as hell , one of the best SSP's of all time.
Gyruss:my favourite game in the 'simple' shmup genre.
The last ninja:Another kickass game I loved.
Defender of the crown:Great strategy game.

If there are any fans around these parts: have you tried any of your old tapes out? Mine have been packed for several years and all......do you think they'll work?

The Vic-20 was the predecessor to the C-64. It featured 16K of memory, while the C-64 had 64K.


The C-64 was one of my favorite gaming platforms of all time. It was essentially more of a console, than a computer. Sure you could right letters, print banners and spreadsheets, but most people I knew, that had a C-64 were using it to play games.


EA published some of the best games on the C-64. Some of my favorite EA published games include:

Racing Destruction Set

Seven Cities of Gold

Heart of Africa

Marble Madness

Sky Fox

Gauntlet


Interplay also had some great titles on the C-64:

The Atari published titles were also very good on the C-64. I enjoyed playing:

Dig-Dug

Pole Position

Donkey Kong ( Better than the NES or Colecovion version's of the game)

Defender

Pac-Man


What can I say, the C-64 provided more years of gaming for me, than any other console I own.

I have that game. It had some funky music and pretty graphics for an 8-bit system. The version I had was called Super Mario, but the guys who did the hacking said it was another platformer, that they changed the characters and added coins to the game. Not a bad game, but no Super Mario.

The C64 was one of gaming's greatest platforms.

My favorite C64 games are: Archon, Barbarian, Bruce Lee, Last Ninja, Fist 2, International Karate +, Maniac Mansion, Mario Bros., Mr Robot and his Robot Factory, Super Pipeline, Epyx' Games series, Ghostbusters, Aztec Challenge, Space Taxi, Gribbly, Moon Patrol, Raid Over Moscow, Platoon...

Late '80's arcade ports like Shinobi, Operation Wolf, Side Arms, etc. were better left to the newer machines.

Most of my C64 disks still work fine(at least when I last tried them) but many of my tapes have died.

And since the Vic 20 was mentioned, I'm a huge fan of it too. Especially since it was my first computer.

Why do I not remember the C-64 looking so good? Seriously. That shit is... good. I want one. Damn my grade-school for giving them away the year before I came back to visit.

Having C64 machines in school was great. Although teachers never appreciated it when kids loaded up strip poker games or pixel-porn on them. :)

And to this day, no one know else has ever heard of "Word Wizard.' Was it made for my grade 6 class and that class alone?

hell yeah, Defender of the Crown. What a great game (at least, my memory says it was). I was so sad when the disk stopped working. I should track that down again and see what I think of it now.

I had an Amiga 500 (Still do!) at the time that game came out. The Amiga version was beautiful to look at, but the gameplay was so, so. Cinematronic games were more about graphics, then solid gameplay.
