From a business standpoint, EA buying out Sega is great. As you said, they kill of their primary sports game competition, and get a chance to bleed Sega's classic franchises dry. Anyone else see Sonic in a Madden game coming down the line if that happened?

Same thing happened to Westwood: when they were bought, many of the original developers cashed out. They didn't have much going for them anyways--that Kyrandia RPG series was mediocre, and Nox was a passable Diablo clone.
I simply can't see EA buying Sega. They don't make tonnes of crap. They're not cheap and lazy. They don't make "popular games". They don't make much money..... and if someone was going to buy them you have to think MS or Nintendo would have done so already.
They're already killing them in sales so what's the point? They're too arrogant to feel threatened by Sega Sports, especially after this past year....Quote:

The point is, why have any competition that you don't need? EA could buy them, fire half the staff, and acquire the liscences they like or desire. They could cut Sega down to nothing, and use that to gain a market presence in Japan, which I'm sure they would want.Quote:

No. Far from it. I'd be well ticked off, to be sure.. but it would not be the end of the world just like Dreamcast's death wasn't. Sega is -by far- my favourite developer.. but even if EA bought them I can't see the likes of EA forcing Sonic Team to screw up Sonic, for example. Well, maybe they would... and if so I don't think I'd be the only one in mourning.Quote:

Also, I don't play many sports games. It would suck to lose the NHL2K series.. but that's it for me (I have not even bought NHL2K2 yet anyway). They'd have to buy Konami to ruin the only other sport I love - football (since Konami makes Winning 11). ;)

I didn't say anything to disrespect your "theory" either. I just disagreed and posted my own thoughts. I think that if Sega were to be acquired I'd place my bets on someone else doing the acquiring.
EA does have more than sports games, such as Need For Speed, Medal of Honor, as well as a few single title hits, like The Two Towers.
I could see EA wanting to become Big In Japan (go Alphaville), by using Sega.
Konami does not make near the amount of sports games that sell in the US, as Sega does.
The only people that think Sega can compete w/ EA is Sega.
It would only make sense if EA wanted to get their franchise rights; and maybe to publish their games in Japan. Especially now that the Square/EA deal is going to run out.

I am well aware of that. But you addressed me personally... and that is how it would directly effect me. If Sega Sports ceased to exist the only game I would personally care about losing would be the NHL2K one and I didn't even buy this year's edition.Quote:

I will be buying Winning 11's NA debut though. So, that pretty much speaks for itself. :)
