Speaking of the music, there was one piece of music which sounded very different from the rest. In the district where you first encounter the wooden planks (Junk City or some such) the music right there sounds exactly like a piece from FFVII. My roomie was playing and it was hard to shake the notion he wasn't playing FFVII while not looking at the screen.
I'm particularly fond of the Ranger HQ music. It, to me, smacks of an underground city run by the local mega-conglomerate co. of choice. I think I'm going to need to buy the OST for this one. The music is way too remarkable not to.
On another note, I LOVE the SOL system. I was afraid at first, though I disguised it with my optimism, that playing the game, and repeating the same scenarios over and over would get boring, fast. But I was wrong! It's exciting to restart a game from the begining and keep an eye out for all those new cenima scenes!
The fact that the dungeons were billed as "random" was a bit misleading, though. The actual shape of the dungeon stays exactly the same, but the baddie and box placement changes. And they're not as random as you might think. I've encountered about 4 different patterns in the first dungeon. You can tell by the box placement in the first hallway how the rest of the dungeon will be plodded.
And now I have a question. In the manual, concerning "Giving Up," the game devs have given us I hint, but I've yet to figure out how exactly it works, and was wondering if anyone might shed some light on this. The manual says that everytime you give up, you should try to reach at least one level higher than the previous game. Why? If I make it to level 10, do my stats carry over to the next game, making those stats my lvl 1 stats? Or am I missing something more obvious, or not so obvious?
I'm not sure if this is correct as the only time I tried it I didn't know about everything that got carried over, but here's my guess:
When you die or the D-Counter reaches 100% and you SOL:Restart you don't keep all your equipment and items (maybe some other stuff as well). But if you Give Up you get to keep all of that.
Now, in reference to trying to make it a bit more each time, they're refering to striving to doing better. If you make it one level higher next time you'll probably reach the next skill, get a bunch more Party XP, and find better equipment. If you don't do any of these then SOL:Restart was just wasting your time as those are the main things that carry over. Also, I'm currently on my third retry and have well over 3000 Party XP (maybe more, I haven't checked in a while) and to reach level 10 for Ryu it only takes about 1000 total XP. I could go ahead and use up a third of my storage to start off far more powerful next time which could in turn lead to me getting farther and obtaining more Party XP.
But most of that is just a theory.
They should have left Breath of Fire out of title too :pQuote:

I like the game, though the SOL and D-counter that severly limits thge dragon change gets a huge thumbs down from me, I loved the dragon aspect of the series and dragons are really cool... not as cool as werewolves though :D
The battles are good, kind of remindes me of Vagrant Story's system in a more turn based approch. All in all it is a pretty good game, not what I wanted for the next Breath of Fire so far but I haven't finished it yet so I reserve judgement till I play the whole game ;)
If someone could help me cause I'm confused, is it better to give up or to SOL restart, I did the SOL restart which let's you keep you equipment, money, skills, party experience points and any items in your storage... would a give up be better?
OUCHOUCHOUCHOUCHOUCH! ...Update: If you die and SOL:Restart, you lose what I estimate to be HALF of your Party XP. DON'T DIE. Common sense and all, but I just lost about 5000 XP (and a skill I didn't get a chance to use since I stole it during the same boss fight that killed me), which rather smarts.
Werewolf: Trust me, you'll still be using the Dragon plenty often. You'll need it until you can build up enough Party XP to start off really strong. When you Give Up you're given the choice to SOL:Restart or SOL:Continue, but it's better to Give Up then die to get that choice. I need to test out SOL:Continue to see what it's limitations are but I think SOL:Restart is better from a "power gaining" perspective and SOL:Continue is better from a "not retreading the last six hours of exploration" perspective.

How often have you used the dragon? Even though I'm curious, I haven't pulled it out once yet and I'm sitting in the ice caves..(I imagine you're farther than that). Anyway, I'm digging this and at the moment it's easily my favorite BoF. We'll see how it goes.
The boss directly after the ice caves is where I'm at, because I've been fairly reckless and enjoy ripping through enemies. I tend to use the Dragon whenever I feel it's nessecary, generally blowing away bosses and the like. I didn't really feel like fighting in the ice caves so I bypassed every non-required battle except one by running around the enemies, although that cost me in the ensuing boss. By the last part of that fight I was at 98.93%, I couldn't transform but I was too weak to win... kinda sticky situation. Hence I died.
I'd be a bit farther but me and my roomie are basically passing the game back and forth, where I'll play a few hours and then he loads his save file and plays for a few hours. It's wierd because we're always at the same spot, but the randomness of items and skills means we have completely different setups.
There's actually an enemy in the labs right before the ice caves that if you let it charge up cannot be killed with anything other then Dragon Breath. But it nets you 3000 XP so it's worth it. :)
What is this enemy, and how'd I miss him?
Is it the three headed red thing? Its name is right on the tip of my tongue...arrgh! I kept using Nina's magic on it without realizing it made the monster stronger. After it killed Nina and Lin in one shot each I had to use the dragon form. I only got like 800 exp since it wasn't fully charged.
I'm loving this game. Right now my D-counter is at 31% and I'm in the ice caves. I'm on my first retry - I died an hour into the game cuz...well, I was stupid. I am looking forward to starting over again, and am somewhat disappointed that it's taking so long. I want to die, dammit. I was expecting to get my ass kicked more than this. Maybe it's cuz I used most of my party exp...
And Mech! You've probably figured it out by now, but you temp save by selecting Quit from the start menu.
