say this one buried in the used pile at an EB, is it any good?
I picked this up a couple days ago at the endcap of the checkout aisle of target. Once again, XS Games mystifies me with their ability to choose a package completely and wholly unrelated to the game within. Why are there two teenagers, and why does one have head phones? And what does the wizard have to do with anything? The game is appearently about a talking cat and a fairy.
Anyway, the game's a hoot. It reminds me of Gunbarich, but the powerup madness is much more played up in this one.Someof the powerups like split ball are wonderfully abusable. The exploding ball powerup makes an incredibly Bangai-Oesque explosion of balls. And it's got a variety of levels, good level design, and some neat, if frustrating bosses. In it's more difficultmoments the game can get tedius, but on a whole it's very fun. And the 2 player mode is a blast, even though it's not nearly balanced.
I picked this up over lunch because of this thread. I love Arkanoid :). I'll post impresions tomorrow.Quote:
It’s essentially an Arkanoid clone with 3 core differences: You have a power up shop at the start of each game where you can buy shields, a bigger paddle, etc. 2 player co-op for "story" mode. One player takes the top with a slightly smaller paddle, the other on the bottom with a slightly bigger one; you both get separate power up shops (one on each side of the screen) to hit before the rounds start. The best part was the 2-player "head-to-head" mode. This is very addictive and the best part of the game. When you knock out so many blocks, you can choose from a list of things that either help you or hurt your opponent. You can either not do anything to get more on your list, or release a constant stream of small attacks on your opponent (reducing his paddle size to half, tripling the size of your ball, etc.)
I had the jap budget release of this quite some time ago, and it was pretty decent arkanoid. One upside is it supports the namco volumecon, so you can get the authentico arkanoid feel.

The lack of memory card support is a pisser, though. Does anyone know why these budget releases don'thave save support?
Also, on a funny side not, in one of the screens in the manual for this game they left the windows title bar on that reads "ePSXe". It's the emu of champions :D
I love EB reviews.Quote:

Hey jiji: What's with the name SevenForce?
I took the name from the boss in Gunstar Heroes back in April of 2000 or so. A year or so later, the guy who calls himself Seven Force started showing up and causing confusion between him and my site. :/ He's better-known than my site, so most people who see my site think of him, but no, there's no affiliation.Quote:
