I figured that out a WHILE ago. I'm sure it was merely a tribute, as the Death Egg was a Death Star tribute.
But... there are also many moon-sized spheroids that are made to destroy entire planets in a single blow and whose names start with "Death"...
well it is a nice comparison... infact its really kinda weird when you think about it, but it's all cool because Sonic is just paying tribut not ripping off...

I always figured...Super Sonic = Super Sayajin and Emeralds = Dragonballs, but so what?
Now that I think about it, Capcom's Marvel/VS fighting series is heavily influenced by DBZ (airborne fighting, Kamehameha-style laser blasts, etc). It almost seems like the Capcom devs wanted to get a hold of the DBZ license but couldn't at the time, so they used their existing Marvel license to create fighters featuring gameplay that is perfectly suited (and most likely intended) for DBZ.
Don't some people realise that everything is influenced by something. As if Sonics 100% original and that a character in it was ripped off to create the huge DBZ francise. LMAO. I spose they think Nintendo nicked a DeLorean in the 80's so they could steal the ideas from Sonic to make Mario.
