Well, something else to consider in your tate vs bit letterbox debate is the resolution of both screens. Ikaruga is higher res in tate, whereas letter boxed 480p actually outputs the black bars as part of the signal which effectively reduces the resolution of the playing field.
Johnpv: The height of a 27" TV is an inch larger than the width of a 19". Good eye...

It doesn't matter how big your TV is... if you play in horizontal (non-TATE) mode, a portion of the top and bottom of the playfield is cropped out to accomodate your screen's orientation. Even if your TV happens to have over 320 lines of vertical res, the horizontal mode (and cosole's output) will still crop the game's screen in the process of converting a lower-res video output to a higher-res screen (or something like that, I'm not an electronic engineer).Quote:

However, some shooters have better horizontal modes than others. Strikers 1945 II (PS1) and Ikaruga (DC) look decent and are perfectly playable in horizontal/letterbox mode. Donpachi and Galactic Attack for Saturn (especially the latter) suck without TATE. DP's horizontal screen is merely a "squished" version of the original, which results in tons of ripples, and you can't even see half of the enemy ships in Galactic Attack due to the cropping (some of the game's special graphical effects can only be drawn in TATE mode, as well).
I'd say go with TATE mode. You'll be able to see the entire playfield, and thus possibly play better.
