It doesn't matter how big your TV is... if you play in horizontal (non-TATE) mode, a portion of the top and bottom of the playfield is cropped out to accomodate your screen's orientation. Even if your TV happens to have over 320 lines of vertical res, the horizontal mode (and cosole's output) will still crop the game's screen in the process of converting a lower-res video output to a higher-res screen (or something like that, I'm not an electronic engineer).
