Dude! The Wonderswan was an even more piss-poor system than the original Game Boy. The only people that supported that system were stubborn anti-Nintendo companies than anyone else.

Some must-have GB games:

Balloon Kid: the much-neglected sequel to Balloon Fight and my first GB game (exluding Tetris).

Donkey Kong '94: Although, it'll be soon be made obsolete with the arrival of DK+ (whenever the hell Nintendo decides to release it).

Double Dragon: Very faithful portable representation of the Arcade original and much better than the NES version that came out earlier. DD2 is not so bad (it has 2P Co-Op), but it's too linear (and they used the same subway stage twice, Warriors-style). DD3 is crap (it wasn't made by Technos).

Mega Man V: The only original Mega Man game on the original Game Boy.

Metal Gear (Solid) Ghost Babel: Where's the GBA sequel?

Zelda DX and Oracle series: Why can't we have an original Zelda game for the GBA?

Konami GB Collection Vol. 1-4: Sadly, this series was only released in Japan and Europe, but it's worth it if you want to have Operation C, Castlevania Adventure and Nemesis (Gradius) on the same cart.

Metroid II: Nuff' Said.

Final Fantasy Adventure: See DK '94, but replace "DK+" with "Sword of Mana".

Fortified Zone: A rather decent overhead shoot-em-up. There was a sequel released in Japan too.

The best part of Fall of the Foot Clan were the hidden minigames.

Two of my favorite GB games are Revenge of the Gator and Bases Loaded GB. RotG is one of the best video pinball games I've played on any format, and BL is just a fun, highly playable baseball game.

Operation C is also excellent.

I'm always surprised when I see someone mention Survival Kids, which I've seen happen all of...one time before now. I liked that game a lot, even if the execution didn't do the concept justice. I'd completely forgotten about that game until a few weeks ago. And in the time since then I've forgotten about it again. But when I do remember the game I have fond memories. I killed a boar and ATE IT!

Blaine gets super points for not only digging the Survival Kids, but Motocross Maniacs. That game was a lot of fun. It's pathetic that Konami couldn't turn out a wortwhile sequel for the GBA.

I think Link's Awakening and the Oracle games blow a Link to the Past out of the water. Don't bother telling me otherwise. Anyone who disagrees is blinded by nostalgia. Or anti-handheld bias. Or has criminally bad taste. Or all three.

Dragon Warrior 3 is the most fun I had playing an RPG in the last decade. Everyone should buy it.

And I can't think of a single game that wasn't mentioned already. I think every other handheld deserved to be slayed by the Game Boy, but its good games were few and far between.

(Oh snap! Revenge of the Gator! How'd I miss that. Good game. I played that all the time.)

Indeed. This is a port of the awesome SFC remake that was (naturally) never released here during the 16-bit era. The game survived the transition to the GBC completely intact, except for a downgrade in graphics and sound (even so, they're still wicked good for GBC). Even the silky-smooth monster animations are still present, made possible by the enormous cart size (32MBits). It completely blows away the original NES game in every way imaginable. Best handheld RPG, period.

- All three Zeldas (LA, both Oracles)
- Super Mario Land
- World Cup Soccer (portable Kunio-Kun!)

I always have a soft spot for alternative RPG's. I like RPG's I'm just sick of being a fucking knight or a wizard. The 'roles' you can play can be anything, and that's usually not reflected in games.

Also for some reason, I really enjoy an RPG on a handheld. In my experience, the times I need a handheld game the most it's times when I need to invest a lot of time.

It's like a nice long book.

More so than a pick up and play arcade type game. Although if I beat the RPG then, it's not as useful in that regard.

So...soft spot for alternative handheld RPGs.

And Motocross Madness doesn't get nearly enough props, glad you agree.

Bionic Commando- The original GB version smacks the NES version, my fav GB game.

Wendy Every Witch Way- From the makers of Shantae, Metal Storm is in the guise of a little witch. Great gameplay, animation and design, too easy though.

Adventures of Lolo- great redux of the series

Shantae- a bit uneven in places but a fine game for fans of Monsterworld.

Snoopy's Magic Show- simple puzzle game with focus on action.

Blaster Master Enemy Below- Control is stiff, and the tank is a bit too big, still the best Blaster Master after the NES version.

Final Fantasy Adventure- Can't wait for the remake, when I sold my GB stuff years ago it was the only game I kept.

Trax- Cute overhead tank game from Hal Labs.
