about damn time too:D
To be honest I don't really care about hardware. I have a backlog of games to play so I pick the occasional new title out of the bargain bin and set it on the shelve till I'm compelled to buy the system. For example I have 7 Xbox games and no system yet.
The games that drove me to buy:
GBA: Castlevania: COTM, bought day one, great game but yeah, the screen was wretched.
Gamecube: Metriod Prime, November 2002, yes
PS2: Silent Hill 3 Demo, May 23th, 2003, yes

GBA: Castlevania: CotM-I made this purchase the first week of release. It's a great little game, and the lighting didn't bother me nearly as much as it seemed to bother everyone else.
PS2: Suikoden III-Their were a ton of other games I wanted to play, but this was the one that pushed me to grab the system. It's not what I wanted or expected it to be, but it's a good game, nevertheless.
I still don't own a GC or Xbox.
DC - VF3 - I boguht the DC for Sega games but mainly VF3, especially after VF2 kicked so much ass. I ended up playing SC a lot more though. So no.
PS2 - VF4 - Best fighting game ever made and VF4EVO is even better. Hell yes!

PS2 for Silpheed, and it got delayed five months, but all the excellent release titles kept me busy until one of the biggest disapointments ever.
GC for Metroid Prime, pretty good deal.
Xbox for Gunvalkyrie, should have bought Halo insted.

I bought my systems mostly based on games that were distant rumours at the time.
PS2:
Virtua Fighter 4
Xenosaga
Ridge Racer V
Legend of Dragoon 2 (where is it?)
Rygar
Xbox:
Halo
Jet Set Radio Future
Rallisport Challenge
PSO I&II
CvS2 Online
Gamecube:
Not sure, really. Metroid or Zelda, I guess.
