Publicly, they are saying that they have no plans to do online games on the GameCube. If they are privately preparing all these great online games as we speak, then that's great, and I'm happy. But why hide it? More importantly, why have they downplayed it in the face of fans screaming for them to implement it? Why not just make a statement at E3 saying, "We've heard all our fans clamoring for us to include online play, and here it is--Mario Kart Double Dash with ONLINE PLAY!!!" No, instead they're saying that "the time isn't right."
E3 is the biggest worldwide public stage for this stuff, and they blew off the whole concept in front of the world. I'd love to be proven wrong, but you aren't doing much to convince me with just some "two-and-two" speculation and wishful thinking. A press release from Nintendo, on the other hand, might work. :)

it does seem as though theyve changed their tune since E3 maybe theyll feeling the backlash of not announcing it at E3 because at E3 iwata basically said well do it when we want to
and now recently he said in an interview an announcemtn would be coming soon
so maybe theyve realised they fucked up on not showing off what gamespy has done

I think there's a lot of speculation going on from both sides. Nothing is out yet and people are talking like it's written in stone as to what the games will or won't have.
Why don't we wait until the games are released to see just what "online play" will be?
For what it's worth, I'll believe it when I see it. Nintendo loves to release gadgets and not support them and the utter lack of advertising of this, epsecially at E3, doesn't convince me that they'll go from not wanting anything to do with online play to throwing in everything but the kitchen sink.
