Well part of it is that some games have them in places where they shouldn't. They can be really aggrevating when you're trying to solve a puzzle or something and being accosted at random intervals. I like how Tales games turn battles off in those areas. SMT is even more extreme, with battles absolutely everywhere. That's obnoxious too. But the randomness itself isn't the problem. I kinda like haing to stay prepared and not being able to anticipate everything. It keeps you on your toes as long as it's used right.
