Tell me -- Are you cheap?

haha - well, i can tell you guys one cool thing. I work at a borders books store, and all the old magazines that are taken off the shelf to make room for the new ones are stipped of their cover (because the actual covers of the magazines ONLY, are sent back to our distribution house) - however the actual magazines we box up and throw in the dumpsters out behind the store, most dumpsters behind book stores are NOT locked... but in a place like where the borders I work at is located there is shopping center security and patrols by local police - so you gotta be careful.

But I can't tell you how many times I've gotten off of work at night around 11 pm to drive around the shopping center for a shortcut, only to see dumpster divers making off with tens of boxes of free magazines - hahah! Hey i don't care, I just work there.

Chains are bad for dumpster diving. Many times, when stuff is defective, the companies will tell you to just destroy (ie-toss) the item since they don't want to pay to ship it back to them. But larger chains usually have compactors, locked dumpsters, or something else to prevent this. At my store, we don't have a trash compactor, but anything that is "destroyed" we actually destroy, with crowbars or sledgehammers, when neccesary.

It's a waste, I can't tell you how many countless times I've wanted to take home some of the stuff I was breaking, especially electronics equipment, when you KNOW that the item isn't defective, but the dumb shit that brought it back couldn't figure out how to load the drivers...

Smaller stores though, they don't pay the money for big compactors or locked trash bins... dive right in! I've also known people who have had luck with large corporations throwing out old computer shit.

Anyone ever read Working Sucks? It's this little pamphlet on finding ways to survive by doing as little work as possible. I has a whole section on Dumpster Diving for food and stuff.

Isn't that what homeless people do too? Try to take too many short cuts and the consequences can be disastrous.

haha yeah, Silver is right... besides, homeless people really have nothing to lose anyway, so I dont think they even bother to think about the consequences of dumpster diving, much less care about them if they do.

Dumpster diving is a craft in and of itself. The rabid anime fans havebeen diving behind animation studios for years to find like a cel of a disembodied arm. I wonder what dumpster sivers get behind Nintendo or other game company...
