Beyond the Beyond
This Rpg was either the first or one of the first for the Domestic Playstation so rpg starved gamers I'm sure bought this one back in the day. I missed out on it but have heard the game is pretty awful. The graphics looked old-school which I like, so what's so bad about it? Did anyone enjoy it, or was it the worst rpg for the Playstation? Worth a purchase for cheap?

I thought it was pretty good very early into the game. I don't remember anymore, but at whatever point in the game you have to go into a cave with a painting on the loor it just began to get progressively worse.
I could forgive the stupid "shaking sprite" animation that replaced any attempts to draw an emotional reaction, but it was just a bad game.

I loved the art style and Shining Force-style head bobbing. But the game itself was crap. Battles were slow and INSANE WITH FREQUENCY! (possibly the highest enemy encounter rate of any RPG I've ever played, and that's saying something!) Puzzles were kind of repetetive, but there were some clever ones in there.
Had they cut the encounter rate by about 50% and sped up the pace of the battles, it would've been a decent RPG. As it is, though, definitely one of the most mediocre ones on the PSX.

It isn't bad except for the EXCESSIVE random combat, you are fighting literally every 2 steps, which makes dungeon exploring a very tedious experience. If they had boost the experience/monster and reduce the monster encounter by 50%, it would be pretty good.

I played the game all the way through and found it fairly enjoyable. What I hated most about the game though, was that your best character, went through most of the game cursed and it really hurt any real developement the character had. It was good for it's time, but I doubt I'd ever play it again.

I'm going to add nothing revalent to this thread but I will say again that the battle rate was horrible!!

This is the only game I have ever broken a controller over. A battle literally every step.

Have any of you ever palyed Vay for Sega CD? I swear, it was the same way: step and fight, step and fight. Made me want to stop playing completely.
BtB wasn't that bad. The thing I hated worse was the horrible choppiness of the scrolling when you walked on the world map. I got headaches just walking around in that game.

Played both Vay and Beyond the Beyond, no way is Vay worse than BtB. BtB is the first RPG I ever played and didn't beat, because I couldn't stand the sheer tedium of playing it even one second longer. At the point I gave up I was maybe 2 hours of play time from the end of the game, assuming the last dungeon wasn't a truly insane beast of a time waster. Which is probably was.
How bad was it really? A week after I just plain gave up on it I found out that there's a hidden opening to the story, some kind of button press on the title screen that accesses a hidden prologue or something. I was so sick of the game I couldn't muster the energy to take it off the shelf, much less bring it over to the PSX and fire it up one last time.
It may be the first game in my collection I ever got rid of. I wish I owned it again so I could get rid of it again.

I finished Vay, yes, Vay has excessive combat as well, but not to the degree of BtB. Sometimes, you get lucky in Vay and you can actually walk 3+ steps without encounter a baddie! Hehe.
