I actually wrote that piece for NP after attending a couple of voiceover sessions and talking to the localization producer. Namco's really putting a lot of resources behind the localization, so I'm optimistic too. There will be another (larger) preview in the issue after next.

That's awesome. I noticed you mentioned that they planned to dub all of the dialogue this time which was like... my most wanted thing from this localization. ToD and ToD2 had staggering amounts of stuff cut. I honestly care more about the completeness of the dub than the VA quality (though I care about both). I'm releived we'll be getting the face chats and stuff this time. That's how alot of the characterization in Tales is handled.

Do you know if they plan to change the music this time? ToD and ToD2 ruined their openers by replacing the music, which was disappointing. It's not the kind of thing that makes or breaks the game, but it definately weakens the first impression it makes.

They're replacing the intro music with a full orchestral piece, but I haven't heard it yet.

Gah, fuck them. That's 3 intros they've ruined now. I don't know if you've ever seen the originals but it's amazing how badly they were ruined by the music change.

I've always wondered why sometimes music and print artwork is sometimes changed in the JP -> US transition. Is it because, for whatever reason, the USA company can't get the clearance to use the copyrighted material? Why does this happen?

This reminds me of the NES days, when all of the manuals for the Dragon Warrior games had completely different (and hilariously awful) artwork, not Toriyama's original stuff. I'm sure this sort of thing still happens a lot.

I like to think these things change out of ignorance.

i like to think the changes come out of the fact that spending a TON (yes, really a TON) of money on a j-pop song that nobody in the US but a few people care about isn't worth the expense.

it's not like licensed music comes free with a game. there are a lot of expenses nobody thinks about in licesning and localization. getting the opening theme songs to the tales games is simply not worth the expense given how few of the potential audience is likely to care one way or the other.

That girl is an elemental summoner? I thought she was a ninja. A ninja would have been better.
