There's a great general FAQ available at GameFAQs covering the finer points of scoring in gruesome detail - Tread lightly if you don't want to be spoiled, though, as it does contain information about various unlockables as well as the latter bosses.
As far as score milestones go, I can have your current stage 4 high score beat about 3 times over by the end of the first stage (which is the Cloud Sea level for Chery as well). I don't say this to be cocky or condescending, but rather just to give you a general idea of what's possible even from a fairly average player such as myself. Volcanoes are important, yes, but equally important is how you go about collecting the medals from all these volcanoes. I found my game improved immensely once I started keeping close track of my total medal count and how it was varying from volcano to volcano, then deciding on consistently successful techniques from there. I'm always finding ways to push my medal count just a bit further, which is what scoring is all about in this game.
Double volcanoes are simple within the score attack, but I've yet to pull one off in the arcade mode, though there is one section that I'm sure it must be possible. The general idea, however, is to trigger the first as quickly as possible, and then scoop up enough bullets to trigger the second within the last moments of the expanding RF.
1s at the end of a score indicate either a continue or restart. I believe scores achieved in this manner are listed in the ranking charts as red, while straight 1-credit/no restarts are displayed in blue.
Hope that helps some.

No no, not condescending at all. I was just looking for a ballpark figure. As I indicated, I'm about a third of the way there myself.
I've already beat my current listed high score several times over, but I'll wait until I hit a plateau before posting a new one (unless some competition shows up).

Here I go:
240,701,736,006,680 - Kaneda / Chery / RL / Stage 3
-
2. 21,379,411,571,31,561 - Victrix / Kart / RF / Stage 7
I was in a very strong groove with this game. That score was achieved two or three days after picking it up, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Was summoned to work on a project after that though, so I had to stop cold turkey, and I've spent the last few weeks in the throes of a Morrowind addiction, which will continue for a good long time here, so I probably won't be able to top it for awhile ;)
If you haven't given this game an honest shot on one credit, do so. The first three stages are basically filler (unless you're going for maximum Volcanons and score, in which case it gets a little trickier...), after that, it throws the house at you, and doesn't relent for the last set of bosses.

Nice to see some competition.
536,092,094,127,740 - sleeveboy / Chery / RF / Stage 3

If only I could crack a quadrillion...
608,522,738,684,340 - Kaneda / Kart / RL / Stage 4
-
Guess I'll throw my shite high score on the board :)
833,894,615,291,780 with Kingfisher (Kart)/ R. Force / Stg: 4
Just started playing this game again, so I should be able to top my old score above. Can't believe how huge some of the top scores are!
edit, sorry bout that mode :)

You got the stage reached and force used for that score?

Beat my old score by a good amount:
1,678,898,753,572,200 - Kaneda / Chery / RF / Stage 4
I've only had the game a couple days, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. If I could just beat that fourth boss...

After the shock of getting over 400 trillion on the first level, I choked and messed up towards the end of my run:
2,141,877,879,304,370 - Kaneda / Chery / RB / Stage 4
I was able to pull off a double volcano in the very first section of the Cloud Sea level which netted a hefty chunk of points, but my score was below average right up to that point, so I just ended up catching up to my average.
