If I get something like this:

am I going to lose a lot of audio quality?
(I'll be using it in my car... duh.)

A cassette connector is cheaper and wouldn't lose as much sound quality. FM transmission by default loses quality. Compare a song you hear on the radio to a CD or MP3 version and you'll see.
Why in the name of fuck would I have a cassette player in my car?
What is this... 1987?
I appreciate the information though.
It can only tune to 4 channels, so I would say no. I bought one of those iRock things (same idea, only 4 channels) and it was the worst thing I've ever bought...I ended up throwing it away. There's another one on Apple's site (if you have an iPod) that'll tune to about 20 or more different channels which might be good.
I don't have an iPod. I have an Archos.
I'm trying to hook it to my stereo w/o having to go in and solder shit.
Yea but songs you hear on the radio are generally "compressed" at the broadcast end ( which makes the quiet passages louder and also kills the overall dynamic range ) so that's not a fair comparison. Cassette tape adaptors have so much hiss and don't help the treble much either, I'd try the FM adaptor myself.Quote:

Well, personally, I would get an FM modulator before I would go in and modify the head unit... but personally I would just get a new head unit with a line input on it and not have to worry about it at all.
Aiwa usually has some good cd recievers with line inputs that aren't ridiculously expensive, I have one.
See... I have a Sony Xplode head unit that I really like. I also don't really have the cash flow to buy a new/better head unit.
I think I'll pick up the FM transmitter, if it sucks I'll take advantage of Circuit City's sweet ass return policy.
Thanks for the input everyone.
I replaced my stock head unit with a Clarion DXZ525 that has line inputs for my Neo Car Jukebox MP3 player after initially using the FM Modulator. Yes, I hated it that much :)
Not to dissuade you too much, but you seem to be in a similar situation that I was in a few months back. Be sure to update us - if that modulator is decent it might be a good alternative for some. I know the one that came with my Neo sounded like ass.
