Highlights from gamespy's preview:
For example, one mode, called Road Rage, gives you but a single life, and you have to spend it trying to take away your opponents'. Keeping careful track of your car's damage level is of primary importance, and it becomes a grueling test of endurance to end up as the last man standing. It's Burnout meets Destruction Derby.
The main reason to take competitors out is to earn more boost, which is the sweet mana that'll take you from the back of the pack to the pole position. One of the awesome things about boost is that once you burn a bit, you'll pretty much maintain your elevated speed until you either brake or hit something. In effect, every little boost raises the risk factor just a bit more, as soon you'll be careening down the road with a full head of speed, making proper dodging and weaving all the more difficult ... especially when driving against traffic!
Burnout 3 adds a number of new elements to Crash Mode, the most obvious of which are the power-ups. Carefully placed throughout each intersection are 2x, 4x, Heart Breaker (this ruins your score), Crash Breaker (your car instantly explodes, causing massive collateral damage) and bonus money pick-ups. To get the highest scores, you'll absolutely need to aim for that 4x multiplier, while avoiding the Heart Breaker at all costs.
Even more important than the power-ups is the new "after touch" feature, which'll let you control your car after it crashes. This ability is nothing short of supernatural -- you can influence your car's direction even while it's in midair. But while it may seem silly, it adds a whole new gameplay aspect to Crash Mode. Indeed, your performance post-crash is now just as important as your performance in the run-up. After touch becomes even more important when you factor in the Crash Breaker countdown. Get a certain number of cars involved in your pile-up and you'll earn a Crash Breaker, which you can detonate at the press of a button. So, imagine creating a pile of wrecks, coming to rest, detonating a Crash Breaker and then flying to the other side of the road to cause more carnage -- that's the power of the Crash Breaker / after touch combo.
It's also mentioned that a member of Criterion calls Burnout 3 "the Xbox game on PS2."
I just popped 16 boners.

Self-congratulatory, yeah, but Criterion's considered one of the top coding outfits in the industry. If anyone can push a system to its limits, it's them - one reason I'm watching their next project, a FPS called Black that reportedly sports godly physics and visuals even at an extremely early stage.
Oddly, I'm planning on it being an X-box game for X-box. Not quite so self-congratulatory in terms of achievement, but just as fun.
The thing I usually find about playing games at E3 is that it takes the edge off the anticipation. Instead of a whole new experience it's more along the lines of a return of an old friend, assuming they made the journey unscathed. My playtime with Burnout 3, however, has had the opposite effect- I'm more impatient now, having played it, than I think I would be if all I'd seen is the movies and screen shots.

IGN confirms XB custom soundtrack support....
Burnout 3: Takedown features 480p and 16x9 support for both Xbox and PS2, plus custom soundtracks for the Xbox. There are no plans for downloadable content and the soundtracks are really the only extra apparently for Xbox.
.....but no saveable crash replays.
Sadly, you cannot save replays in either version, which would have rocked.
I'd take css if I had to choose one.
Here are the tracks:
U.S.A.
Downtown Chicago
Silver Lake (modeled after a national park)
Waterfront (modeled after San Diego)
Europe
Water City (modeled after Vienna)
Alpine (modeled after the German Autobahn)
Riviera (modeled after Monaco)
Vineyard (modeled after the South of France)
Far East
Island Paradise (modeled after Koh Samui, seen in the movie The Beach
Dockside (modeled after Hong Kong)
Golden City (modeled after Bangkok)
I think there are 40 total tracks - should be a few for each area.
Couple cool new features:
Your menu for the single-player game is done up like a Sat Nav you're viewing in your car. Only, where normally you'd be warned of areas to avoid, this is a Burnout Sat Nav, which means that you get locations for all of the trouble spots throughout an area. The hot zones aren't just races, but also include Crash Junctions. But you don't have to complete everything to progress. You can skip crashes if you want and play them from the Crash Mode menu, but this way you can easily hop from the racing stuff right into a crash when you need a change of pace. This way the game can fit a bit more into how gamers actually play games, instead of how developers try to force gamers to play games.
There's also a load of unlockable goodies in Burnout 3. You can earn 10 different Crash Headlines, one for each track. These fake newspapers have some pretty funny titles, which you can discover on your own. There are also different Signature crash point on the tracks that unlock postcards. These Signature points might require, say, that you bash someone into an RV at a certain spot. It's not clear where these spots are, so you'll have to crash a lot of crap in order to find them.
Crash Mode also has a power-up called the Stealer:
The Stealer only comes into play in competitive Crash play and is the only power-up that makes no sound if you pick it up. That's because you don't want your opponent to know you have it. Nab the Stealer and once both of you have finished your crashes, your scores will flip-flop. That's right, if you get the Stealer and score $5,000 in damages and your opponent racks up $300,000, those scores will reverse (ha ha!) and if the score is good enough to be ranked in the top 100 online you'll have his score poster under your name. Oh, the humiliation!
Um, wow. Hurry up Sept. 8.
there's a preorder burnout 3 demo available in the uk. sigh.
