In North America, it's appallingly bad and I believe it's never been worse.
This goes for web and print, but at least there are a few decent (usually "small-time") websites out there.
The more mainstream gaming goes, the crappier related media will be (eg; full of ads/sales pitches/subscriptions [pertaining to online sites like GS complete, IGN insider etc.]/etc.) You'll have an increasingly harder time trying to find unbiased, normal info for games you're interested in for "free".

Computer Gaming World is a great mag. Very well written and informative. While I really have no problem with EGM, they can learn alot from their sister mag.
