Um, it's also a race, or at least an ethnicity. When Nazi Germany was determining who was and wasn't Jewish for their purposes, ancestry, not religious practice, was the standard.

If you're gonna classify Jewish people as a race then one would be correct in saying all Catholic people are a race. Now that doesn't sound right, does it?

On the other hand, most Jews look like Jews. I look Jewish, Sataro probably looks Jewish - even though I'm a Russian Jew and Sataro might be some other form of Jew, we're going to look somewhat alike. I don't really practice Judaism, but for all the world I'm still pretty much identifiable as a Jew.
Judaism is a religion, while the word "Jewish" describes a religion, a culture, a people, a race of semitic wanderers, whatever.
So the fact that most Jews look alike, which isn't even true, makes it a race?
Jewish people may be a more closely knit group than Catholics, due to our smaller size, but that doesn't mean we can be considered a race.
Here's an example. When someone asks "what are you?" you don't say Jewish, cuz that's your religion. You say the country of your ancestry. That's your ethnicity or race, not Jewish.
Well, no, I'll say Jewish more often than not - I'm a mix of a few different things, and the one uniting characteristic is that I look and am Jewish.
Why are you still Jewish, even if you don't practice, as long as your mother is Jewish? People can still be Jewish even if they don't practice any part of the religion.
I know you can be Jewish if you don't practice the religion. I still consider myself Jewish even though I don't practice it. It's still just that though: a religion.
It doesn't say enough about you to answer the question of "what are you?" Jewish people can come from many countries, so you're not really saying all that much about yourself by just saying you're Jewish. Same thing with Catholocism.
I realize now though that this is just a matter of preference and viewpoint, and arguing about it isn't going to change anything. But then again, does arguing ever change anything? ;)

A friend of mine is Hispanic but he looks Jewish. Once when he mentioned something about Christmas in a conversation with a teacher, she said "I though you didn't celebrate it?" Hilarious, because all she was basing it on was how he looked.
