DOOM

I started playing Doom on my computer tonight after talking about it with some friends, and damn it's still hella fun. I actually think Doom is more fun than most of today's FPS's.

I attribute it to two things:
1) Simple, action packed gameplay. No puzzles, no enemy AI, no tactical battles, no story, no cutscenes, just killing, killing, and more killing. Hell, you don't even have to look up or down. Walking into a room and killing 50 imps with a shotgun is a feeling that is unrivaled in gaming to this day.

2) Absolutely incredible level design. They're just simply incredible.

Anyone else think this game has aged extremely well?

Without a doubt.

Its rare to have a lan around here without a bit of Doom coop on Nightmare.

I'm just waiting for another FPS with a main character that runs as fast as the Doom marine. That guy probably could run at twice the speed of Master Chief's Warthog. :)

Doom is still, and always will be, the king.

Does anyone, by chance, know where one could get jDoom? My hard drive crashed on me, and everyplace I tried to find on google was down.

Yes Doom is awesome. But Doom 2 is even better.

I highly doubt that any FPS will ever catch Doom 1, 2, and 64. I love those games to death, and I hate FPS. Go figure. :)

And agreed on the level design. Great stuff.

Doom definitely still holds its own. I love those 100% max replays.

jDoom was cool to mess around with, but it's a bit system-intensive for this old PC I'm using. Legacy Doom is more my style.

Doom will always, always rule. The only game that challenges it today is Serious Sam, and much as I love that series Doom is still the first.

Was it Ultimate Doom that had the two really hard chapters in it, 26 (or so) levels apiece? I played that a year or two ago and just had a total blast with it. Level design wasn't quite so spiffy as Doom/Doom 2, but the challenge could go through the roof. The best thing was that they gave you the ammo to handle it, and after a bit you realized that things that were impossible in the original game are now a cakewalk with the skills you had to develop. The "Didn't this used to be difficult?" syndrome.

Doom 2- the city levels, where you had streets and some tall buildings to run around in. Mmm...

No 3D FPS to date has been able to capture the intensity and sheer number of enemies that you have to wade through on-screen at any given time. Hmm...4 3D monsters or 50 2D monsters? I'll take the 50. I mean, jumping, crouching, looking up and down, and fighting more strategic battles against 'smart' enemies in todays FPS games is cool, but sometimes you just want to be overwhelmed with countless enemies everywhere and only be concerned with pulling the trigger and somehow making it to the next room alive. DOOM will always be a classic and continue to age well.
