What you're hearing is the reflections from the back wall. This can be stimulated by having a very solid back wall, i.e., no posters or anything. However, the results will be limited. I'd much rather have a good stereo setup than a poor surround setup.
Heh! I still remember having two speakers salvaged from a dead radio, plugged into a Y-jack and connected to the mic output of my Genesis/Sega CD, and hearing the Raptors of Jurassic Park Maul me from all directions because I was too slow with my taser. The grooviest part was when they got to the point that you would hear them chewing and eating your eviscerated remains.

I had blew all my Burger King Janitor Money on the actual system, Blockbuster was my only chance to play most Sega CD games before the prices dropped out of sight.
The games were in great condition, good as new!
