These aren't the faults you're looking for. . .

Reports have surfaced throughout the net, such as one existing Bioware.com's discussion thread regarding an increasing rate of Xbox units becoming damaged. The cause is apparently linked to - playing <b>Star Wars: Knights of the Republic</b>.

Users have indicated problems ranging from hard drive units becoming corrupted to CD access functions mysteriously being compromised while playing other native Xbox titles.

It's uncertain just how many copies are at fault, but regardless, this is certainly a cause for alarm. No official statement has been released from Bioware as to the unfortunate predicament. Special thanks to Shinobi128 for the heads up. Stay tuned for updates as they become available.

I have mixed feelings about that.

Mostly I feel bad for the people who's X-Box was screwed up. y'know, whole lot of empathy when it comes to games and systems.

A tiny part of me feels vindicated though for all those long arguments about the failure rate of hard drives and how having one in a console might not be the best idea.

Hopefully this is an isolated problem to KOTR.

This is silly sensationalism. Software screwing up a CD drive's mechanism? Anyone with even basic knowledge of technology will know that is ridiculous.

Maybe some people had faulty XBox's to begin with and are just using it as an excuse to do some XBox bashing?

if everyone starts experiancing problems after they played KOTOR, then this is something that should be looked after. simple as that!

I have had some problems with KOTOR- mainly dealing with a few crashes and noisy DVD drive sounds.

No other game has been affected, though. Plus, I have routinely played 5+ hour marathons at KOTOR. Overuse perhaps?

Considering the backlog of games I have, I've yet to pick up the game. Who knows, perhaps Bioware will make silent revisions to game by the time I purchase it.

I am about 10 hours into KOTOR and have yet to experience any problems. My Xbox is brand new though, so maybe it's the older Xbox that is having the problem...

Seriously though. If KOTOR can do this then something is wrong with the debugging and dev kits for the Xbox in the first place. It's crap this happened, don't get me wrong, but Bioware is no more responsible then Microsoft would be.

(A proper debug kit would've said something was conflicting)

It's probably just something accidental. At the same time, MS probably won't replace the systems for free. I would be shocked to hear it.

Mario Party was software and it destroyed N64 Control Sticks by making you use it in an unsafe way!
Akumajou Dracula X was software and it corrupted your whole Saturn's backup memory if you collected everything!
Metroid Prime and other games cause excessive wear and tear by whipping the GC drive to an inch of its life by making it work constantly!
Some copy right protected CDs (software) can destroy the mechanism of
your CD drive because they are protected by having a corrupt ToC (so copy software creates a corrupt CUE sheet, which means the ISO file is unreadable). And, some CD drives see a ToC as gospel (while others will look for where the ToC says a track is, and if it doesn't find it, it will look a little up and a little down until it finds data), Anyway, the CD drives which use the ToC and don't search, will constantly try to read for the start of a track (which may be off the CD). Constantly pulsing the laser and changing the speed of the motor, which can cause excessive wear and tear in a very small timeframe.
