He's one of the most influential people in the gaming industry, maybe even the most influential designer of all time. Most of his work is based on the Ultima series which is pretty much where all of the conventions of the RPG genre come from. And I also believe that U7 was the first game to feature the 'go anywhere you want' gameplay. So I doubt that stuff like Shenmue , Morrowind, or even GTA would exist if this game weren't released. Sure, I'd much rather play newer RPGs like KOTOR, Valkyrie Profile, Chrono Cross, Fallout, or Baldurs Gate... but Ultima is easily the most influential series of all time.

Any fans in here?

ultima underworld is the only ultima game i ever played. shameful, i know. i was always vaguely interested in them, but i never got around to buying any others.

I have major respect for Garriott and Origin in general.

I really want to go back and play through Ultima VII especially. I can't get it to work properly though. It uses some unconventional memory manager. I got it to work with the Exult Windows patch but then for some reason I couldn't feed my characters.

One of the reasons I have an undying hatred for EA and UO(/X) is what happened to Origin under their control...

I'm also pretty new to U7. Can someone help me on this Exult business? I've just recently upgraded to XP and DOS games are a bitch to run.

I tried Exult on Win 98. It probably supports XP but I don't remember.

There's also the SNES port of U7 but I hear it's pretty shitty and many things were changed.

I highly doubt the GTA programmers were inspired by U7 when they were programming.

Lord British is the man, based solely on the fact that Ultima Online (The first 2 years) is the best MMORPG to date.

I never played and of the regular Ultimas though.

i thought this thread was about that ship from the gradius series. is it named after him or sumthin'?

Major props to the Ultima series, I also liked Ultima 4, STRICTLY for the story. One of the best ever in games.
