I played a single 5+ hour game on New Years with three Culdcept newbies. The result was the purchasing of a PS2 system, 2 copies of the game, and a multi-tap between my three friends :)


Sleeve - Focus your territory increases on a single territory until it hits level 5 (make sure you have a strong defense creature on it), and concentrate on getting a 5 chain of the cooresponding territory color. Ignore leveling up any other territory until you get that level 5, and then level up others in the chain. That's a simple gameplay strategy that can work really well on the earlier levels.

Sleeve - Another basic strategy that could help is to concentrate on 2 colors on the board instead of all 4. Putting non-cooresponding colors down to increase territory color chains (i.e. the placeholder technique) can be highly effective (just don't waste your manna leveling up the placeholders).

Yeah, OK, I'm up to the first 2-on-1 battle now. Things are going good, even though I got my ass throroughly whupped by Ryvern and Luthien.

I'm trying to scrape up enough cards to build a second deck, this one focusing on red-green.

Ultimately once I have most of the cards, I want to build all kinds of crazy decks. Messing around with Powder Eaters and Protean Rings, global creature damage decks, weird shit like that.

Can anyone explain to me how symbols and temples work? The manual isn't much help.

This is a very basic question so anyone should be able to answer. I understand that you need to have guys on the same element squares to make chains, but how do you make it so they attack together? A few times I got a rat to get in on the action, but didn't really know why. Does that second attacker need to be touching the square of the primary attacker?

I hate Magic and all that card based stuff (NERDS!), but this game is fun as hell and I haven't even tried the single player mode yet.

Tonic: Well, creatures don't "attack together" from adjacent (touching) squares. When either you or your opponent land on an occupied Territory, the one landing on that Territory can summon one Creature from their hand to battle the one Creature that already occupies that Territory.

However, there are occasions when two Creatures can be used in such a battle. However, in these cases, one Creature is always used as an Item on the other Creature. Examples of this would be:

- When either the attacking or defending Creature has Support Ability, so that another Creature card can be used as though it were an Item. In that instance, the Strength and Hit Points of the Creature that is being used as an Item is added to the Strength and Hit Points of the Support Creature. (Think Bandit, Cleric, Trojan Horse, Valkyria or Wizard, to name just a few.)

- Sometimes two distinct Creatures can be "combined" to form one more powerful Creature. For example, in the case of Battle Gear Alpha and Battle Gear Beta, when one is used as an Item on the other during battle, and the Bundlegear will be formed.

Aside from this "Creature as Item" effect, the benefit to having Creatures occupy adjacent Territories is the +10 bonus to Strength that each of them receives. So, for example, if your Creatures occupy three adjacent Territories somewhere on the board, the two on the ends get +10 ST, and the one in the middle gets +20 ST.

Sleeveboy, think of Symbols as the Culdcept stock market. You can purchase Symbols at a Temple for a certain price, which is an "investment" that you are making in that particular color. Later, if a Territory of that color is raised to a higher level, or if a Territory of a different color is changed to the color of the Symbol that you purchased, then the value of the Symbols of that color is increased, and so too is the value of the Symbols that you own. Pay careful attention to the messages that appear on-screen when Territories change hands or when they are leveled up, as the change in Symbol values is always displayed. At the Temple, you can buy Symbols of any color in the various regions of the game board at their current price, or you can sell Symbols that you have previously purchased.

As far as strategy is concerned, for example, if you're playing primarily a Yellow deck, and if you plan to occupy and/or improve Territories of that color, then it's probably a good thing to buy Yellow Symbols before you begin making a lot of improvements (in other words, buy low). Alternately, if you know that your opponent is playing a Blue/Red deck, then perhaps you want to buy Blue and/or Red Symbols, in case your opponent gets out ahead of you during the game.

In addition, the player holding the greatest number of Symbols of a particular color in each area of the game board will receive a Manna bonus every time they reach the Castle. So, you also need to make certain that you have purchased more Symbols of a specific color in a specific region of the map than any of your opponents, in order to receive that bonus.

Wow, I just got this game from EB for $19.99 used. Pretty nice price for this "rare" game, those who are on the fence should definitely take a chance at this price. Although, it might be hard for some of you to find it used at your local EBs. For some odd reason, the EB I went to today had 4 copies. Hehe, now they only have 2 :p

I heard that only 30K copies were printed. Can anyone confirm this?

I'm on the penultimate level in story mode. This game is so awesome. I've played some truly epic matches so far. The most unbelieveable of them all was in Kazatega. Here's a short breakdown:

I was trading off for the lead with Whirlwind most of the match, slowly building up a red chain. Whirlwind had some high-level lands right near the castle and I got nailed by them a few times, but eventually managed to put them to sleep (negating their toll) with a Barrow Wight (I love this card to death). All of a sudden, Ryvern grabs an open level 5 land and rockets into the lead! He's crossed the magic power level requirement for the level and is about to hit the castle. I have a chance to win, but I've just passed the castle and need to complete at least a half-lap before I can make it back. Fortunately Ryvern needs to pass through my red territory before he can win, so I level up my territory like mad, bringing up a Gas Cloud and Larvae to Level 4 to go with my Valkyria at Level 5.

Ryvern rolls, lands on my Larvae, and loses the battle. This takes him down by a lot, but still within 500 G or so of the goal (meaning the castle bonus will put him over the top). I look at the remaining squares in front of Ryvern. The only possible way I can win is if Ryvern rolls a 4 and lands on my Valkyria. I sigh to myself -- this will be my second near-win on Kazatega if I fuck this up. Even though I have like 5000 more total magic power than Ryvern at this point, I'm still gonna lose. I start to console myself by thinking about the cards I hope to win after the match to take my mind off my impending defeat.

Ryvern's turn comes up. He rolls a 4. Valkyria slaughters him.

I about died right then.

I did pretty much the same thing in the battle with Ryvern and the priestess chick whos name escapes me now. Cept it was my turn to roll, she was one square from the castle, and I was eight. It was her turn next and I didnt have anything to stop her with. Closed my eyes, jammed the X and didnt open em till I heard the fanfare. Good lord that was a tense moment.
