Emergency Computer Help

what a horrible time to ask. on a friday night when the board is beyond dead.

anyways, here's what went down.

one explorer browser goes ape shit, freezes, then another one, the goes winamp, then goes trillian, then i get tired of waiting, so i reboot (not through the o/s).

so i reboot my comp, i get to the XP loading (with the blue bar at the bottom), it takes 3 times longer then it should to load, and right when it seems like it's gonna finish loading, the computer reboots itself.

come next reboot, i get the screen asking me if i want to run in safe mode, yada yada yada...

first time i do normal boot, same thing. 3 times as long to load, then reboots itself.

second time i do safe boot, loads up the special files or whatever, once it's done loading up those files, it reboots again.

anyways, that's pretty much all it's doing, is just rebooting itself.

i don't have any windows installation cds on me or anything like that. um...anyways, my moms room sucks hard ass, and im probably gonna get kicked out of it withing the next 45 minutes, so any help would be appreciated since my Dreamcast modem got fried or something.

Seriously, like I said in the other thread (AFX's) I had a similar problem and all I did, as a quick fix, was reinstall windows without reformatting. But you don't have the disk so that's gonna make it difficult. Did you install anything new, software wise, within the past few days? Also when was the last time you ran a scandisk to check for errors and bad clusters and defragged?

last time i defragged was within the last week. haven't ran a scan disk in some time though.

oh, and i haven't installed anything in some time.

ok, just found a random xp disc, no key though. and it's pretty damn scratched.

Lhadatt recommends i try to do a repair, but im worried that if it isn't possible to complete since it's so scratched, that i'll end up fucking myself even more.

is that possible?

God I hate computers...

Seeing as I had a similar issue try running a Virus scan if it'll let you do it in safe mode. NAV2003 didn't report anything for me but you may have better luck. Otherwise it may take me a day to get back to you on this one.

you won't need a CD key for repairing or installing it without reformatting since it'll just use your current settings so go for it.

You should try what I told AFX to try; try to roll back the PC to a date before it was fucked up.

like i said though, the cd is really scratched, so i risk not being able to complete the repair.

will not being able to complete it end up fucking me more?

Reinstalling without reformatting is just going to cause you more problems in the long run. :)

I'm telling you, just do a system restore.

I don't think it makes the changes until itt's read all the files it needs for just such an instance.

He just wants to repair it dude. and for fucks sake It's a "Quick Fix" not a permanent solution. Which mean as soon as you're up and running save burn and do whatever to back-up you files and reformat. Also restore isn't a 100% fix either.
