I know there's a bunch of Ontarians lurking here. So, what do you all think of tonight's massive Liberal victory?
I voted Liberal, but I'm surprised they won in my riding. My town's been staunchly Tory-blue for decades, so that was a real sign of how much everyone wanted to be rid of the tories.
Holy shit was I ever surprised. I saw a Liberal victory coming but was not expecting this unbelievable land-slide. I actually thought it might have been tight, especially considering Dalton's - how shall I put this - dodginess. Plus, what's up with that really lame budget he bandies about?
I kinda wished the NDP did a little better.
Do you actually the Libs'll make a difference and fulfill their promises?
Will we actually see change?
We'll see changes, but it's hard to say what exactly. Dalton McGuinty may have been dodgy, but the Tories had no platform other than to attack him. I did appreciate that he said, right out in the open, "I won't raise your taxes, but I won't cut them either."
I never trusted Ernie Eves one bit. He's too "big-business", and has creepy, beady eyes.
As for the NDP, it was just a matter of being caught in the crossfire. They deserved more seats, but the voting public was too polarised between PC and Liberal. (I'm gonna vote NDP in the federal election. Jack Layton would make an amazing leader of the opposition.)
That, and the NDP got no press at all. All major new outlets gave their attention to the Libs and Tories. I kinda felt sorry for them.

Good point... :) it would be especially worthwhile since Paul Martin's reign will probably be a shift to the right compared to Chrétien. Also, it would be a lot less embarassing for Canadians than having the fucking Alliance as oposition. It's embarassing enough that they even >exist<. :(Quote:

The Communist Party also had a few candidates scattered around.
Anyways, the reason I'm gonna vote NDP for federal is for two reasons: 1) Jack Layton is a stand-up guy who has a pretty clear vision; 2) the Liberals are gonna win no doubt, and Martin's untrustworthy, so we need a good opposition for them. I beleive Layton will actually debate issues, instead of just playing constant devil's advocate like the Tories.
You present some good points. But the first-past the post voting system kinda fucks my plans to vote NDP federally. It's like throwing away your vote. I could write "Bloc" on my ballot and put an X next to it, and that vote would count more than a federal NDP one.
But by voting NDP, even if the candidate in your riding doesn't win, you're still making a statement. It's almost certain the Liberal incumbant in my riding will be re-elected, but that won't stop me.
It's also a little-known fact that you can hand in a blank ballot and declare a "vote of non-confidence". You're still voting, but it gets counted as a vote that you don't support any of the candidates.
