I still remember the first time I played pong and tempest. Even today I hold them in high reguard becuase their influence was totally about gameplay, yet it sickens me when I see kids younger then me calling it gay and whining over how much it sucks. (goddamn newbies) I guess it's something you have to grow up with to have any appreciation for. :rolleyes:

When I was 12 and loving my NES and Genesis, I was also out at yard sales scooping up Atari 2600 games and begging my friend to let me play Impossible Mission on his C64.

It's funny what kids think is cool.....I babysit for my cousin sometimes, and she has a PS1, and I'll bring over stuff for her to mess with. She hated hated hated Ridge Racer Type 4, but she literally played Bushido Blade 2 for 8 hours. I thought I was gonna claw my eyes out, but at least she was pretty quiet.
They should've given these kids a wider timespan of games to play. What about games such as Quartet, Arkanoid, Shinobi, After Burner, and Street Fighter II? Of course, I had a feeling they wouldn't give a rat's ass about Pong.

It seems like Andrew may have played Super Space Invaders '91, Space Invaders '95 (Akkanvader), or Galaga '88. Becky's remark about the invaders looking like squids & crabs cracked me up considering Taito made Darius later.

Well, I'll dispute the article with 100% first hand experience. I'm 30, I have a son that turned 10 in August. For his birthday, 8 of his friends between the ages of 10 and 12 came over to spend the night for his birthday party. On my main tv, I have a Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube w/ Gameboy Player, N64 and SNES. On the side tv, my genesis is hooked up.
They played games all night and the two systems that got the most play were SNES and Genesis, through no guidance from me. The party started at 2 in the aftenoon and they played up til 10. During that time, the SNES and Genesis were off for about 1.5 to 2 hours while they played Gamecube (Mario Golf, Time Splitters 2)
The games of choice for the remaining time were:
Genesis:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Hyperstone Heist (played the most, with Super Double Dragon)
Samurai Shodown
Shadow Dancer: Secret of Shinobi
Kid Chameleon
Sonic 3
SNES:
Super Double Dragon (For a long, long time)

When they were done playing games, they got to choose a movie from my collection of about 175 dvds. Again without my prodding, they broke the choices down to 2 movies: 1) The Holy Grail, and 2) Wayne's World. They decided on Wayne's World and most of them knew the movie from end to end... ("Oh, I love this part when she hits the car with her bike!") They were also scarily knowledgeable of The Holy Grail, btw.
I was kind of perplexed at all this, to tell the truth. But to qualify all of this, these are kids with at least one system other than gba and most of them have multiple systems. You could say that they are the l33t gam0rz of his elementary. ;)
