What would it cost to run an XBox dedicated server and still be able to play the game running on your server?
- a second X-Box
- a second subscription to XBox Live
- a second copy of the game to be played
Anything else? And would a cable modem connection be wide enough to support both XBoxes and all connected players? Has anyone found or heard of a way to use your PC to serve as a dedicated sever for XBox games on XBox Live?
as long as your modem is running thru a router and not a hub you sshould be fine. me and my brother used to have 2 pc's, his xbox and my ps2 all running at once (the pc's running eq on his and kazaa on mine) and we noticed no drop in transfer.
but just wondering.....why would you want to set up a dedicted server?
I was playing Rainbow Six the other night and was getting horrible lag out of the non-dedicated servers online. I thought it would be nice to be able to set up a dedicated server at home so that I could always count on getting good access (and provide a good dedicated option to the Live community). But the cost looks a little too expensive for that....
well the thing is if your the server you would of course have no lag (just like with pc gaming). really if you wanted to, just start your own normal server with the system you have and invite your friends. they may experience a bit of lag but on your end you wont notice it (the joy of serving the games).
Time to bitch that a huge ass company like Microsoft can't put up any damn servers for us.

Ive had some amazing RTCW online experences these past few weeks since I've started playing again, most were on dedicated servers.

I really could have sworn MS said they would be handling all server hosting for Xbox live when it was announced
i thought that was the whole big deal about it and why MS was charging you a yearly fee
I think it would be a boost to the live community to be able to keep a live dedicated server available that could rotate games. But the cost - personal cost - would be too great. I don't mind getting a used XBox for it (I could mod it and do different things with it), but to have to buy a second Live license and then multiple copies of the games would get too cost prohibitive.
Ah well, it was a thought....
Live is just an excuse for making more money.
